Projectionists that have a good mechanical and electronics ability should go for the technicians or at least the head operators job. A projectionist on staff in a plex that has the know how to handle most breakdowns is worth his weight in gold. I also agree that working for the indies is the better route. Alot of indies have much higher class operations than any chain ever dreamed of having. There is more pride to be taken in your work at the indie level too and it is far more appreciated. To me my job as a technician over the last 18 years has given me much satisfaction knowing that I have contributed to the experience and enjoyment of zillions of movie goers. On the advice of a former apprentice, I joined a theatre service organization as a technician. It is quite a different life-style (I never appreciated how much free time a projectionist had). Technicians often do "homework" - studying schematics, planning installations, designing special-purpose automations, ect. The best part of the job is that it is never boring - no two days are alike. If you like to travel (whether you want to or not), can take the interuption to your plans of a ringing pager (how do they always know you just ordered a pizza?), and want a challenge to everything you thought you knew, then this may be the career for you. Don't worry about making the wrong choice - you'll be too busy to think about it. Good luck.  |  IP: Logged
