Randy,

I've got a story/idea that might work. I was a member of a frat in college and personally despised car-wash fund raisers. So, with an interest in the movies, I contacted our local cinema to have a special show. We cut a deal to bring a film the kids liked, (Dazed and Confused, Half-Baked, Bordello of Blood,etc.) and also threw in a small drink and popcorn for a small price. I started that in '96,ran it then and again in '97 before I let someone else do it beofre I graduated in Spring '99. We've always had crowds about 300-350 per show. (The trick is the club or organization sponsoring has to come up with "x" amount of dollars beofre they profit. I made every member sell 5 tickets. (60 members x 5 = 300) So that we had enough to pay for the film,theater, and free cokes, and made a cool thousand or so. It beat the hell out of washing cars!

I worked at the University of Florida (just quit last week to work at a large chain) and we had a Strong platter system and a Strong/Simplex projector & soundhead. The platters were fairly new but the projector was old enough to be non-automated. And the lenses weren't on a turret-- we had the oldschool one-lens-fits-in-at-a-time deal. The picture quality was fine, (except for when we'd receive prints with large green scratches down the middle) but the sound quality was really awful. There were two speakers on either side and one large one on the ceiling, but there really was no stereo effect at all... Everything was pretty much mono-sounding.
I've worked on ORC platters before... Didn't they go out of business so you can no longer buy any parts? We had that problem at another theatre I worked at... When I started we had almost 3 brains to every platter system. Then when I left it got down to like one brain per platter system, and I was told we'd just have to keep trying to fix the old ones because you couldn't get parts anymore.

Strong bought out the ORC platter and console lamphouse line a few years ago. You can still get parts for ORC platters---just order them from Strong.

At William & Mary, we just had a pair of EX-6100s. The booth was also used for sound work during live events in the same auditorium, so the projectors were mounted on casters and could be rolled out of the booth for non-film events. Sound was run through the same system as used for live events (speakers, skits, etc.) and was less-than-stellar (actually, the booth monitors had better sound than the auditorium system...).

Then again, if anyone cared about sound quality, they wouldn't have put in 16mm equipment...
