Thanks Pat. A nice compliment, but I wonder if my "great job" of putting them together is due to the fact they were only really apart for a few days. I figured that would be the best way to keep them in good shape, by being able to run them. But, yes, it's a lot of fun working with them (my wife laugh's when I say I'm going out to the "booth" - they're set up pointing out my workshop door to nowhere). Picture? I wish I knew. I have lamps I can't light (3-phase carbons). And no screen. These machines are currently mounted to a 5 degree upward throw. My wish is single-phase smaller carbon lamps (these were running in all their glory at a drive-in with 2000' magazines and Futura II arcs). That way, I learn the right way. But, it may remain just a wish, they'll be hard to find. So for now, get 'em running, work on threading, getting the sound working, and I've told my wife that I want lamps for my birthday (well, she asked!). Thanks again.

Welcome, Dave, and good luck. Come on, wife... Although if she lets you have projectors you're doing better than me.
Tim, I don't think the "drive-in" kit is available anymore per se but I'd have to check. I think we still have the oil guages and such, just not sure about the required tubing, etc. The pickup is easily reversed in the machine for operation -- just getting an oil level reading is the harder part.
I can't remember the last time I had an up-angle installation with new machines, though...

Check with the Edward H. Wolk Company in Chicago for the Drivein oil kit (www.edwolk.com).

The "Drive-In" kit Simplex number G-4350 (Strong Bin number 52-60057) is still listed in the parts price sheet and carries a list price of $65.00.

The kit does not include the oil guage itself (you take it from the front). If your oil system does not have the manfold for moving the oil pick-up to the rear, then you will need to update that as well.

Steve, do you have a listing for the manifold, bracket and such?

Thanks!

AHA! Best thing I've done yet is to print off the parts catalogue. I see what I need (or may need) if I ever raise angle further.
It's all that stuff coming out of the oil pump to a 3-way junction. So, who's my local Strong Int'l dealer? Is it Gordon McLeod? (Who by the way, I believe worked on the machines I have for years, there's the guy who kept them in such good shape.)

Anybody know much of the "Strong Super 135"
carbon lamphouses? Last night, dad got treated to the drive-in and taking a tour of the booth, spotted two very nice examples. The originals of the same model are rusting in the rain, but these look almost perfect. This theatre runs single phase (he says 3000W Xenon) and always has. Could I light these lamps single-phase? If not, how did they do it?

Dave, you can run YOUR lamps single-phase, with the right power supply and the right carbon trim.

BTW, every lamp could run on several sizes of carbons, to tailor it to the specific installation... the lamps don't really care WHAT size you run, as long as:

- the proper size carbon holders are available for that model and,

- the ammeter's big enough to read the current range.

OK! Thanks Tim. I think the source of the most confusion for "newbies" like myself is in lamping, Xenon or otherwise. I'll still persue those 135's though, because they were spotless (and very cool looking) and perhaps he does have the power source I need.

But on to my next topic - the TALE OF 2 PROJECTORS: I just returned from "the booth" (I have some pictures if anyone wants a good laugh of the drive-in booth to nowhere!) Number 2 runs a nice constant oil splash on the glass, with an even drip - drip - drip to the intermittent flywheel. It's the one that makes the "whipping" noise. Do it all night if I left it on.

But Number 1, positively GUSHES on the glass and flywheel and then drops volume to what I thought was normal and then more or less quits spraying. The whole process lasts for approximately 40 seconds and I'm too afraid to let them run for more than a few seconds after that. As it dries up, oil seems to be thrown fairly hard toward the oil intake. This machine is whisper-quiet.

Sound familiar to anyone? I'm hoping maybe it's just a matter of installing the upward-angle kit, although these ran at current up-angle as I mentioned before.

Lastly, what is maximum wattage Xenon on single-phase? I've talked to many drive-in owners locally who say they're in the 2500-3000 range. Thank you.

PS- For what it's worth, you fly those ad banners Brad. They're not the annoying ones anyway and this site is just a fabulous resource, you folks are lucky to have it. I wish we had one in my "real" business. And thanks again to all for humouring this newbie. Free carload pass for you all will be waiting at the box!
