We just got those Technicolor ads with the "lostteeth.com," etc., in last week, and I was not only peeved with the white lines and writng between sections, but they also spliced the Farmer's Insurance ad off-frame on one of them. When I started the movie, it was fine, but five minutes later, half of it was on the ceiling! I was, needless to say, less than impressed.

Sometimes the ads promise more than the product delivers. For years, Edwards Cinemas in southern California has shown ads for the Los Angeles Times. The ads show some interesting behind-the-scenes looks at film production: special effects, location scouting, dubbing, stunt driving, etc. Then the tag is "Read it in the Times." Well, I've been reading the Times for several years now, and I've yet to see any article that even remotely covers what the ads show! The ads are among the most entertaining I've seen in cinemas anywhere, but the producers apparently have no connection with the editorial staff of the paper. In the late 70s/early 80s, the Showcase Cinemas multiplex (East Hartford, CT) nearest my home used to show an ad for a flea market held at a drive-in about an hour+ drive away, and for a short while showed an ad for the framed pictures hanging in the lobby. The VO would lead with "Ladies and gentlemen ... the Showcase Cinemas art gallery" ... and we'd applaud simply to mock the genteel, precious tone of the ad. Both of those ads seemed a lot longer than they actually were. ------------------ -Bob Lee Applications engineer QSC Audio Products, Inc. Costa Mesa, California

Oh, yeah.. I forgot about the Showcase Cinemas art gallery! There was a Showcase near me in New Haven CT and they had that too... dumbest thing ever.I think that there are only laws regarding subliminal advertising on TV. If I remember, one of the things that pushed through those laws was an ad for Volkswagen. In the ad, there was just a guy staring at you, saying, "Volkswagen, Volkswagen, Volkswagen..." over and over for 30 seconds.
