In my booth we use the clear-film-wrapped-around-the-print method. I don't think that they are a major pain to use, and the reliablity of them is worth the effort. Enough so that the thought of a print w/o one of these 'belts' makes me nervous. The one thing these belts don't prevent is the print being thrown off the platter - if the whole print wants to move, it's going to.

With one of these belts on, issues such as stiff tails aren't really a problem - the whole film is orientated the same direction (ie up ) - this means you can always see the name of the print, on the print. Another thing we do is write the name of the print on a piece of tape, and stick that on the tail - the name is always easy to read and allows the members of our booth to get 'creative' - no problems like Joe was talking about in his July review.

Incidentally, I have a question to ask about that review; in the pic of the "me myself irene" tail - if the word "me" is at the head, and "irene" at the tail, and your platters spin counter clockwise, then it wouldn't matter if the soundtrack was up or down, right? The label would still be backwards.

And with all due respect Joe, shouldn't someone with your experience and versatility be spending less time complaining about the orientation of lettering on the tail leader and more time bagging out Christie?

For those who prefer to make a "band" to go around the feature film roll, Kodak's subsidiary FPC offers very stiff 35mm processing machine leader:
http://www.fpcfilm.com/US/en/motion/FPC/fpc/proc_mach_specs.html

For example, Item Number 9100 is FPC Blue Transparent Uncoated Polyester Film Support, 7.0 mils thick (regular print film base is 4.7 mils thick), and perforated with regular print film perforations (KS-1870). This leader is also stiff enough to use as a "straight edge" in aligning projector components. In 1000-foot rolls, it's less than 10 cents ($0.10) per foot.

This stuff is TOUGH!

Brad,

Where do you get that white leader? I checked with my supplier and they don't carry it, but if I can get a part (stock) number for it I can probably have them get it for me.

Dave:

FPC also carries "FPC White Movie Leader, Acetate Base, Opaque (985) white leader suitable for leaders and trailers on release prints. Thickness 6.0mil." They also have "frameline" and "lightstruck" leaders.

The white leader you saw in the picture is actually "white painted leader" and is not regularly available through normal cinema dealers. For that matter, the clear acetate tail leader I use isn't available through normal channels either. They come from a special supplier and is made by Film Conversion Company if I remember correctly.

Brad:

FPC also carries "painted leader". Don't know if it's similar to the one you use:

Michael,

I think Joe was trying to point out that with prints from Deluxe you can't simply put a piece of tape behind the title on the tail leader to have an nice professional looking label like this...

Of course, for those who like to "re-name" their prints to more suitable names, a little creativity with the splicer will still get the job done.

Brad, that Pokemon tail cracked me up!

What is 'painted leader?' And what is the difference between it and acetate film stock? Will it break under pressure?

Painted leader is just clear acetate film that has been painted a color. In the picture above demonstrating tucks, white painted leader was used.

Gordon:

Sorry, I'm not familiar with the details of every type of leader FPC sells. I suggest going to their website, which has a brief description of each leader, and a way of asking for additional information:
http://www.fpcfilm.com/US/en/motion/FPC/fpc/fpc_main.html

My contact person at FPC is Christel Pareigis. Her e-mail address is christel@kodak.com Telephone: (323)468-5774

Not sure if all the leaders are available on both polyester and acetate base. Since some of the leaders are made on recycled print stock, I wouldn't be surprised to see more polyester base available.

Just joined Film-Tech and would like to present our way of preventing tail wraps.
We place an extra wrap of film around the print and tape the ends together. Also on this wrap of film is all the information relating to this film eg. FANTASIA 2000 -
W/S SRD DTS SDDS

When the film tails out the wrap is left on the platter and then re-wrapped around the film for the next screening. This eliminates the use of suction cups or having to tuck the end of the film under the edge of the main body of the print.

We have been doing this for over 31/2 years now and we have not had one tail wrap problem.

As far as preventing tail wraps we also make a film belt out of black leader enough length to get around those three hour monsters, and also use and I call them "Hula Hoops" -- Which worked good last Tuesday while running The Patriot. If I did not use it there would have been a problem.

Also while I'm on here does anyone do this by labeling prints with all the information about the print. For example In Red Sharpie Pen Ink (For Scope) We would label as follows "SCARY MOVIE #2"(for multiple prints of the same title) -- Print #1234 -- Scope -- 5 Reels -- SR/SRD/DTS/SDDS -- 7/6/00 -- JJP (and after my initals comments like Reel 4 replaced or came from Mega Monster Plex in Your Town.) Curious if anybody else does that.

I mark the back side of the identification tape (which is used to display the pre-printed title on the tail) the theater's name and print number. Keeping up with flat/scope and sound formats has never been an issue.
