On RCA 1040's that haven't been converted to solar cells or red readers, the arm that holds the relay lens to the phototube is close enough to the film that it rubs against it if there's even one perf too much slack left between the drum and the sound sprocket. On many of these older installations you could see where the arm was
polished for the exact width of the film.
