For anyone in the Los Angeles area, I caught this in the American Cinematheque's calendar:

Director Baz Luhrmann’s phantasmagorical musical MOULIN ROUGE (2001, 20th Century Fox, 126 min.) has been hailed as one of the most visually inventive and wildly kinetic films in recent memory for its mixture of turn-of-the-century Parisian nightlife, late 20th centruy pop music (beautifully performed in the film by star-crossed lovers Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor and astonishingly ornate production and costume design, courtesy of Catherine Martin (Luhrmann’s offscreen wife). Please join us for a special screening of MOULIN ROUGE—followed by a Q & A with director/co-writer Baz Luhrmann, actor Ewan McGregor and production/costume designer Catherin Martin!!

Like I said, competition was stiff from another local production called 'Lantana'.Moulin Rouge ended up with the award for Best Costumes and Best Sound, although it was nominated for all the major catagories. Sad, but from all I hear, 'Lantana' is excellent. The rumour is that many in the AFI were hesitant to give it the nod owing to the huge amount of US dollars in this 'local' production. The other news is that the re-release is not doing that well. It may be back for only one week.  When is that re-release in the US? It comes out on DVD here December 5. The latter fact is also in the ads in the paper. No kidding...'See it one more time on the Big Screen! Starts Today! On DVD December 5!  Come what may...

Hi JohnYou deliberately let slip that it was print #270 just so I couldn't get it. We only finished running it last wednesday 28/12 and even then it was still doing good business. See you later Paul

Hi Paul...Bought the DVD of this great movie yesterday. I haven't watched the whole thing yet but here's one interesting thing I have found... In the finale when Ewan is walking up the aisle singing his little heart out, in the theatrical release he got to the stage and was at one point singing so hard he basically spat all over Nicole...remember?? Guess what with the DVD? No spit! They have obviously performed the soon-to-be-patented DSR process. (Digital Spittle Removal.) Also, the paper he's typing on and the whole typing/crying bedroom sequences have a noticable bluer tint to them. I'm going now to check out the 2000 hours of extras.  See you next Wednesday.
