...so the projectionist hears a commotion from the audience and
sticks his bald head out the port to hear what they're yelling and
check the screen image, when his glasses slip off his face and fall
outside the port and he looks down to see them smashed on the aisle below and the screen is a blur while the audience chant rises ever
louder, "FOCUS!, FOCUS!!, FOCUS!!!"

I was working on thr Fly-floor of a Theatre (no not truly a cinema booth story) telling a touring crewman about the eathquake we had during a show a few months early (lots of fun watching all the suspendeded set swinging) when a few seconds later RUMBLE RUMBLE SHAKE SHAKE.
Next night at same point in ballet smart arse touring crew says over comms system 'stand bt earthquake' and not 10 seconds later RUMBLE RUMBLE SHAKE SHAKE.

Paul, John, Evans,
*racking brain to remember all of those boring latin classes*
"Materiaruinosusupernephobia"
"The fear of matter falling down from above"

It should also be noted that Gary Larson penned a cartoon with the exact scene that Gerard described above

Thanks Jon,

There was also a funny "Rocko's Modern Life" cartoon about visiting the theater and the projectionist setting the screen on fire with his glasses falling in front of the lens. Everyone thought it was the special effects and just sat back, funny-ass episode for a kid's show.

Daniel & Paul;

Be glad you don't work for Cinemark. If I caught you riding your scooter in one of MY booths, you'd be tossed out on the spot. I'd finish out your shift myself and I'd tell the manager I sent you home.

Having you crash into a projector would be the LEAST of my worries. I'd hate to hear of a situation where the manager comes upstairs looking for you because the movie is 30 minutes late, only to find you lying on the floor all bloody and broken.

I'm not trying to "get on you" or anything but you have to remember that you are in charge of MILLIONS of dollars worth of equipment and the entertainment experience of THOUSANDS of people. How'd YOU like to be the manager who has to explain to a theatre full of Moms and kids that Monsters Inc. isn't going to play today because the projectionist had to be taken to the hospital with a head injury from horsing around?

You should try to act like a professional.

Randy,

I totally agree with you, I wasn't proud of doing that, and like I stated I did stop. I never skated during the day or when the booth was running just down the long hall when checking to see if my breakers were off before leaving, and never near the equipment. But you were right, and I have been reprimanded, just a stupid thought I posted in accordance with the scooter.

Paul

I must admit that I have done my share of fooling around. I'm not trying to be "holier than thou" but that's one thing that just tripped my trigger.

Back in Pennsylvania, where people aren't afraid of gunfire, I used to have a potato gun. One night, we were outside just farting around. I got wise an mentioned to a couple of the other guys that I had the thing in the trunk of my car. About 1/2 hour later, the boss came outside and asked, "Hey, what's all that noise?! Customers are complaining!" We quickly ditched the thing in the weeds and said, "I dunno', boss. We heard it too! We were just out here to find out what it was." <bullshit> It's a lucky thing he didn't look up at the side of the building or he would have seen the "splat marks".

To this day, I kick myself for not keeping my big, fat mouth shut in the first place.

How about shooting off fireworks from the booth port to add special effects to any particular movie?

Well thats all fine and dandy if you had a death wish and wanted your theatre closed in a BIG hurry.

We can count on Matthew to go off the deep end, can't we

Here's a story that should top the boarding, thankfully it wasn't done by me :-).

On a thursday night I was helping to get the film buildup process going as I had to leave early and be in the next morning to open up. That night was also the last shift of another projectionist as she was being transferred to another theater. So she had invited some other managers from a couple of other theaters to throw a little goodbye party as she built and screened movies. Well thinking that these guys were managers and such that they'd behave themselves accordingly. I was wrong.
I had come in to the booth the next morning to find it a pit, food and such everywhere, projector heads left uncleaned, and finally the scorched remains of a trampoline some 10 feet or so below the rear balcony of the building. I of course was pissed and was about to call the head projectionist, when I recieved a call from the projectionist of honor at the previous night's party. After thoroughly bitching her out she exclaimed what had happened, apologized for the mess and told me (and later my head projectionist, the GM, and the DM) that one of the managers went out to the rear balcony, set the trampoline on fire (under a sprinkler I might add, it was a miracle the thing didn't go off) and tossed it off, leaving it to smolder and leave a nice char-mark on the cement below. Well to cut the story short some people were of course let go, and me with this story to tell.

Some knucklehead asked us to turn up the contrast on the screen.

The manager kindly showed the nice man what film and projectors are.

All I can say is that I'm glad he didn't ask us to pause or fast forward.

Have had numerous people ask us to rewind the film so that they can watch the trailers they missed. After explaining how everything works, they told me they thought it was just a VCR that we stuck a tape into. You can't believe how hard I had to keep myself from laughing in there face.

That may have been pretty funny to you and to us on this forum, but just imagine what percentage of the audience believes that. Probably greater than we'd expect.

I'm not asked about VHS anymore. People do want to borrow the DVD's though. The next question as soon as I say we're using film is if we splice the porn in, and if not, can we start? Fraternities. Gotta love them.
