GOOD "Need help with Century DAW2 projector running slow"

BAD "Please guys .... I really need help with this ...."

Also, this topic was already posted half an hour earlier by you under the more appropriate subject header ("Century DAW 2 Speed Problem"). I have since closed that thread.

Please read the FAQ in it's entirity before you post any further on these forums. Without these basic forms of organization to the forums, it makes things very confusing to people who are searching for an answer to this problem in the future.

Because there were already more replies here. Also note that I cross plugged this thread so if someone is searching for this problem in the future they can find this discussion (because otherwise with the title of this thread it would get lost).

If the projector has been in use for a long time and is equipped with the poly-V belt, the motor pully has a tendancy to cahnge diameter! The V grooves will wear causing the diameter to reduce, thus slowing the machine down. I have had 60 cycle machines run as slow as 15% when the pully is worn! Especially if it is an original aluminum type sold by Century! Replace it with a steel pully! It will last longer!

Quick test for wear...

Take the belt off...wipe your hand around the motor pulley...check your hand...if it is all cut up, then the pulley has worn a bit too long!

Steve, that seems a bit extreme

Seriously, if it has poly-V belts that is the most likely problem. With a few years of use the pulleys get a mirror finish and unless the belt and pulleys are absolutely clean there is slippage. Every Century I've seen oozes oil and grease drippings down towards the belt and if you have a takeup drive the grease from that gear is hard to keep off the belt. I have seen this speed problem fairly often with well used Century setups. Sometimes the projector will even slow down as the reel plays - the takeup film roll is getting bigger, reel is going slower adding a bit more drag.
If you are about to replace the pulleys and belt, bite the bullet and get the toothed belt kit. No more slippage.
What drive do you have between soundhead and projector? I like the sound of the Hyvo chain best.
