Terry Beard's comments don't seem to provide any information at all on how the 70mm mag releases were mixed. ?? He doesn't address that issue. He's specifically discussing optical vs. digital. Seems like a big leap to assume that the optical mix was used for mag.

Actually, from what he says in the 3rd paragraph, one could infer that the mag mixes were in fact probably different from the optical mix. Talking about Jurassic Park, he says they worked their magic for the 5.1 digital format first, then took that and ran it through the magic box to create an optical mix.

One must remember that the mag masters of the stem used prior to the digital revolution had extended dynamic range that was usually compressed to the optical
The norm was that a seperate printmaster mixdown was used for the opitcal release compared to the mag release

Gordon,

Am I correct in the track assignment that I posted. This is coming from long ago memories and I'm just not sure if I am correct.

Darryl asked:

>Wasn't the Six tracks on a 70MM print derived as
>L,LE,C,RE,R,SUR....with the LE,RE serving as both
>a sub info and an extra left and right for behind the screens.

Well...not for behind the screen. If you're talking about a split surround print (Format 43) the mid's and high's on LE and RE are for the surrounds, to be combined with low end picked off track 6, which is the full range, mono surround while the low end on both those tracks is the sub info you refer to. The surrounds are stereo in terms of mid and high only with the low end being the same on both channels. On the more common "Baby Boom" (Format 42) print, LE and RE are low end only.

A theatre not equipped for split surrounds getting a Format 43 print just plays the boom part of LE and RE and the mono surround track.

>Basically you had 5 sets of speakers behind the screen for
>L,LE,C,RE,R and you had mono surrounds and Sub bass also
>carried on LE, RE

Right but the screen speakers for LE and RE would be LF cabinets only UNLESS the theatre was also supporting traditional Todd-AO style soundtracks (5 screen channels, 1 surround) or the Dolby version of it (same thing but with noise reduction, Format 41).

Whem I attended a Dolby School back in the 80's we were luckily taken to the Saul Zaentz facility and given a tour and a demo of how films are mixed. One of the lead mixers(Mark Berger?) on Amadeus did this with several sections from the film. I remember him saying that they had Altec A-4's behind the screen in the dubbing theatre so they could mix on a real life theatre system. Not on a system that was souped up and so on. The sound was really good and dynamic range for type A pretty amazing. I do remember some over mod problems on the optical stereo tracks in the actual release prints. Perhaps they attempted to forgo any compression on the opticals for this film. I am looking foreword to this being done in digital formats so I can hear how good the masters actually sounded all over again.

Mark, I'd wager that the 70mm mag track was a pretty good representation of what was on the elements you heard. I rather doubt that more will come through on the digital release print formats. Perhaps less!

BTW, I visited the SZ mix stage years ago but I didn't get to see it in action as you did.

Huh? How many "5.1" 70mm mag releases were there besides the 2001 print 5 or 6 years ago?

Was this 5.1 70mm print format given a special Dolby Format number? I think I read somewhere that this was the only 5.1 70mm format print(s?) ever run for a title. It may have been from an article or post you wrote at another site. Was there a reason for the odd format (as opposed to the 70mm SS format?)

Steve Guttag said "There was no baby boom on the film"
Are you sure about this Steve. When at Dolby school in the mid 80's Sam took us all over to Saul Zaentz where the re-recording mixers for Amadeus too apart one of the reels or the mix to explain how sound mixing is done. I specifically remember him discussing how they determined how much "boom" to mix in. Perhaps someone screwed up your sound transfer and I wonder if your print was defective?
I also remember that the Type A tracks were a bit overmodulated as well. Lots of distortion at high levels.

Honolulu was one of the few cities in the United States that was fortunate to play "AMADEUS" in 70mm a few weeks before it went into general release in 35mm and I saw it three times in the now defunct Cinerama Theatre. Although it was a blow up from a 35mm negative, the 70mm image was very bright and sharp and the sound was just magnificent although it did not have a split surround track. The dynamic range as far as I can remember was excellent. The restored 'Directors Cut' in 35mm played in Honolulu a few weeks ago at the dreadful Wallace Restaurant Row Theatres but I refused to see it there and decided to wait for the DVD when it comes out in a few weeks. The thing I dislike the most about the Restaurant Row theatres is their digital sound system. Although they have surround speakers, they are not used because all of the sound only comes from the three stage speakers no matter how agressive the surround tracks are. Getting back to the 70mm presentaion of "AMADEUS" at the Cinerama, people here in Hawaii like anywhere else leave as soon as the credit starts rolling but almost everyone remained in their seats during the credits of this movie when the entire second movement, "Romance" from the Piano Concerto in D Minor, K. 466 was played. Listening to that beautiful music on the Cinerama's wonderful HPS-4000 sound system brought tears to my eyes.

If my source is correct, there is a new 8-channel mix for SDDS for the director`s cut of Amadeus. That information does not seem to be supported by the format information in some of the posts above.
