This is not a performance review but I can't resist sharing it. I have a friend who is in college in Billings, MT who was home for the holiday this weekend and related this to me.

He went to see AOTC at the Wynnsong 10 (a Carmike) in Billings. The show failed to start on time, and after a few minutes delay, an usher walked into the auditorium and told the crowd that the "projector bulb was blown" and they did not have a spare. Wait, it gets better....rather than offer refunds or free passes for a future show, he told the whole crowd they could see Spider-Man across the hall...it was either that, or nothing.

As it happened, my friend had not seen Spidey yet, so he and his party went ahead and watched it. No word on whether there was a riot in the lobby.

Gawd, I love Carmike in Billings. They are great for our business here.

Plus what if there was a small child in ATOC. (PG) , too young to see Spiderman (Pg-13)

A co-worker and I saw Attack of the Clones tonite 27 May at the Merrifield Cinemas in Merrifield Va at 6:30PM. The presentation was DLP. The theatre was full so we could not find seats together. He was near dead centerof the auditorium, I was 5 rows from the front and 4 seats from the left wall. We concurred that the picture was bright and clear and free from flicker. From his seat the pic. was for the most part sharp but there was some fuzzinessin more than a few scenes. From my seat off to the side much was soft with vertical lines resembling what could be seen to the side on a lenticular screen. The vertical lines on the screen were annoying in bright scenes. My friend didn't see the vert. lines. Sound was great, but the surround channels could have been louder. If all digital is done nearly as well as this and considering the improvements that will undoubtedly come, film as a presentation medium will be dead when the financial and distribution problems are worked out. It certainly is not perfect but it is good enough and that is all most people expect. Was it worth the 100 mile trip each way just to see digital? Definitely not.
