Smith Theatre at Schofield? I took a touring live show through there about 14 years ago. They used to play AC/DC for non/sync. There's another big changeover house at Fort Shafter in Honolulu, Richardson Theatre. Another huge house. I am not aware of any theater at Ft Shafter. Must have closed down some time ago. The local cineplexes have put up a strong competition in Hawaii. The only two that I'm aware of are Hickam AFB and Schofield. Unless your carbon arc was improperly aligned or sized, carbon arc light is every bit as good a light source as xenon is, as far as image quality is concerned -- many would say significantly better (although that is usually a subjective assessment). So all things being equal, the change to xenon is not something the audience should see, and no reason in and of itself to make that change. The real reason xenon becomes essential is when management wants to automate the booth; that is an economic issue that has nothing to do with what the audience sees on the screen. If you have also moved to a platter transport system and automation, then yes, xenon would be something that you were not only thankful for, but it would be a necessity. Xenon allows management not to improve anything the audience sees, but allows them to eliminate real projectionists in favor of the economic advantage of letting assistant managers, concessionaires, ticket-takers, what have you, double as TAPS (Thread, And Push Start) operators -- the one most significant reason IMHO why platters have gotten a bad name in some circles. If you are still a change-over booth with no automation or platter, then there is no real advantage either to the audience in image quality or to management in that they still need to pay a full-time projectionist. The only advantage might be to alleviate the need for a projectionist to change carbons and tend to the carbon arc lamphouse, something most well-trained, dedicated projectionists never found to be a particularly disagreeable part of their job. Thus my question: why are you thankful for the move to xenon?  |  IP: Logged Claude S. I think they are still showing movies at this theatres between live shows. I have been to this theatre as well as the main theatre at Schofield when I served my six months of active duty in the US Army Reserve in the early sixties and I recall they were both large venues. I photographed an event a few months ago at another Hawaiian military theatre and this one was at Pearl Harbor at the sub base. The house looked like it had about four hundred seats and was wired for stereo but I do not know if it is digital. -Claude  |  IP: Logged
