I know what you are saying, and for making butt splices that is definitely the best way to go about it, but there is still a gap when doing it that way.

Some lesser-quality splicing tapes may stretch with age, or excessive tension may pull the spliced ends slightly apart. So even a "perfect" gap-free butt splice may eventually have a tiny gap.
