I hated working on those things!!! Besides being huge and heavy, you had to use a special "grounding hook" to discharge the stored energy in them before you could work on them. Jeeze, that shock hurt. It felt like every bone in me was busted for a while, too. It must have been one helluva reflex. David, the Klystron was no big thing....it was the Magnetron, Thyratron, PFN (Pulse Forming Network), and the series resonant charging system used with the HVPS. That consisted in itself as the PFN, a Blocking Doide, and a Charging Choke. No bleeders in this one. One of our guys got hit with that thing, and that was posted on FT about the same time as when I described my date with the xenon igniter. The HVPS developed 9,000 volts DC. The flywheel effect of the capacitance in the PFN and the inductance in the charging chole stacked up 18,000 volts on the PFN. That charge just sat there until a trigger came along and fired the thyratron, or when one of our guys accidently discharged it with his body. Actually, 6 volts DC can knock you on your butt, too. I had an old 1950 Chevrolet and was working on the engine. I was going to "bump" the engine forward by using a wrench to energize the starter solenoid. A nice hot and humid Memphis Tennessee day....and I was sweaty as hell. When I used the wrench to bridge the contacts, the inductive kick of the solenoid knocked the wrench out of my hand and I was thrown backwards several feet.  |  IP: Logged Michael Schaffer "Where is the Boardwalk Hotel?"
