Regarding dealers and bids .... Our company is building a theater near Chicago, and I sent some bids out for install. But I called each company first and explained who I was and talked to them about it. Some companies were not able to bid on the job for different reasons. Some came right out and said they were not interested or other reasons (for example, our's is a union job, so non-union contractors can't apply.) But they told me upfront what their thoughts were.

Often, I think other dealers get bids from people who are only checking up on their regular dealer; who they will probably buy from anyway. It can take some time to go through a bid to price it correctly, and if a dealer gets a request from someone he never heard of before, the dealer has to decide if it's a "real" request and invest a half-day work, or just some accountant who needs three prices to put in the filing cabinet.

My point is, I don't think it's right to just blindly send a piece of paper in the mail, then wait. You should talk to the dealer (or whoever) first, and get to know them at least a little.

I noticed that the originator of this topic has posted requests for various items in the classified section of the site and as a note most dealers are reluctant because of warranty liability to install 3rd party supplied material

Greetings All from Cambridge

I have for many years relied upon the services of Bell Theatre Services for my ancilliary technical needs. Whilst I depend on many of my own inventions for my day to day modifications, I will permit that Mr. Bell and his fine chaps serve me well when an out of the ordinary modification is required.

With a tired mind, I bid you all a good evening.

Gord and others........
I used to have this attitude when I ran my own company. However since working at CLACO I have actually found this to be more profitable to the installing dealer. Although I always encourage customers to purchase as much "new" equipment as they can afford many customers will still try to buy as much late model used gear as they can rummage up. Actually we find that we usually end up making more profit repairing and selling parts for that "other used equipment" that is bought from private parties, or other dealers.

Also, if a customer buys equipment as-is from someone else he is automatically assuming the liability as to if it will work or not even though you may install it...... If you end up on an install like this just make it clear before you start that "the owner" is responsable for any repairs to equipment you did not provide. This is also another reason we generally charge T&M for all of our installs......

While I am not a big customer by any means, I have always been impressed with Mark Gulbrandsen's willingness to help when others let me down.

While at GETS Mark took really good care of me, and more recently, Claco and Mark supplied me with some oddball special order Kelmar parts that I needed.

Based on nearly four years' experience with Mark, I would vote him a great dealer with whom to do business.

A toast to Mark!

Also in the UK :

Omnex Pro-Film

of Stockport, Manchester is another great company.

I've always had good experiences with the major UK companies, they are all dedicated to doing the job right and will go the extra mile.

Though I have no real experience of financial transactions with Omnex, I can say that Ged & Co. went way beyond the call of duty to assist when I had some minor issues with an Omnex rectifier supplied used by a third party. Hats off!

Sound Associates have also been good to me - in supplying aperture plates for my Vic 4 at very reasonable prices and even sourcing a used Vic 4 lamphouse cone so I didn't have to wait 3 weeks and pay 3x the price for a new one from Italy. Very fair indeed.

Jack Roe are also top notch for service in my limited experience and the consumables I've bought to date have been at a most reasonable price...plus the FilmGuard connection of course!

Thank you Brian and David. It's good to hear of satisfied customers!

Personally I try not to use these forums for sales or advertising. We and the other companies whose employees post here don't contribute financially to the running of this site, and I feel that to use it as free advertising is a little brass necked.
