I would think that if the director was watching the film and he heard the problem, he would do something about trying to correct it.

Maybe he didn't stay til the end, or maybe he didn't notice it, although he was there on three different nights (desperately plugging it to the 20 or so journalists that bothered to come over from the US). I didn't speak to him personally, and didn't get any feedback on the print from anyone associated with it (except that it had a tiny amount of dirt during the first show, so I had to make-up a whole new print at 1am! [Mad]
