Gord,
The lack of headroom on the 117 card, and the original 108 as well is exactly why the 517,and 108C were designed...aside from the fact that the fader chips are probably obsolete. The faders also have a rather bad crossover notch at the hf end of the band. The 517 is so much better than the 117 that you ought to think about adapting it to the 100's that you service up there. It would make a huge audible improvement. Hey, as far as many of the IC's in there are concerned thats vintage technology.

But don't get me wrong...I hardly hate the 100 at all. I installed a few used units that gave no problems at all...ever. A number of them are still in service in various locations and alot of different things can be done with the unit for other purposes as well.

Hi!

Finally, I have now 2 Cat 280s [thumbsup]
In which position should the switch on the back be?

IIRC correctly the switch only pertains to using them in certain external NR frames and doesn't matter when plugged into a CP. But you must make sure they are 280T's (280 with the tiny jumper cut to force them into decode) so they don't go into ENcode mode when in a CP (making SR more SR).

You unfortunately can't plug them directly into a CP-55 though.

quote:
A few questions about the CP55:
1.Is there a way to modify the Mute- Fade out time? 1.5 sec. is to fast.
2. Is the Non-Sync Input going through the complete EQ?

1.Yes, change R34 on the Cat 243 card. I think around a 470K gives a nice 4-5 second fade.

2.Yes.

There were many inexpensive frames made for those 280T cards by Smart, and USL used may be available if you check around. There may still even be some new ones available. Keep in mind though that none of them did the necessaey level switching so you'll need to crack the fader open just a bit more or calibrate a DB or two higher than you normally would. Since everything but older films are SR thats now a mute point. After the analog and B chains are properly calibrated match your digital playback levels to the analog using the center channel pink noise as a refrence. Reversions to analog will hardly be noticable if done this way.

A correction to Mark's statement...the USL SRM-10 did do the level shifting for SR and had a hard relay bypass for type-A pass through...in effect it was a better choice than the SRA-5.

I stand corrected on that, but the one we have on the shelf has nothing in it for level shifting. It is a used piece, perhaps a very early version.

Mark,

Look on the backplane...you will see resistors and such...in the SRM-10 manual it lists what to stuff to achieve the 3-dB boost (it didn't do it as delivered...only as modified as described by the manufacturer).

I'll try to scan and send the manual if it isn't in the manuals section here (my copy isn't a great one though).

Yes, I know that I couldn't plug the cards in the CP 55. I will try to get a SRA 5 in the next time!
They are 280Ts - what exactly do you control with the switch on the back?

Thanks

Max
