Author Topic: Cleaning The Old ORC Hot Mirrors. That translates to extremely little operating hours vs. the months or years they mostly sit. To make matters worse, I purchased the two lamphouses that are in my screening room from Iwerks, as they were cleaning house and had some that had never been opened (indeed I was the one who broke the "staples" off of the shipping cartons). Phil Hill can verify they were brand new with the factory seals, as he was working for Iwerks at the time and he handled the sale. So short of getting someone from Strong to physically visit and somehow determine that these were defective when they were shipped out of the factory, I don't have much hopes because technically the warranty has expired. That's the biggest problem I have found with private installations is that if ANYTHING is wrong with the equipment, the person buying it gets because by the time the defect is found out, it's too late for the warranty repair. That picture of a broken ignitor I posted on another thread a few days ago came out of one of those Super Lume Xs too, again brand new in the box. That doesn't bother me as it wasn't all THAT big of a hassle to fix it. Lauderdale, FL, USA Registered: Jun 2001 posted 12-31-2003 07:51 PM                     Gordon, as I said in my post, all manufacturers using metal dichoics have taken a dump sometime, somewhere. Maybe in the frozen North your reflectors run cooler I had one problem with glass dichoics, which was a factory defect traceable to a bad run, which was promptly replaced...with glass most problems are caused by the client cleaning improperly. The older non plenum box Highlite consoles also had some flaking issues which we solved by better ventilation and upgrading the wimpy muffin fan in the lamphouse optical bench table.....and shaft collars with spring washers to prevent drifting focus....another tangent  |  IP: Logged Mark Gulbrandsen Resident Trollmaster Posts: 16657 From: Music City Registered: Jun 99 posted 12-31-2003 08:28 PM                     Brad, For those that are not aware Strong puts several dots of heat sensitive paint on each reflector that leaves the factory. Without them visiting you they will definately know if it was exposed to too much heat. Warranty in this case might still be honered if the bad reflectors came from a problem batch that they are aware of. It certainly wouldn't hurt give them the batch number and ask them if you should ship them back for inspection. Of the two in my screening room, they both have the exact same ventilation, yet only one is flaking, so I'm pretty sure I got a defective one. I am not sure about ventilation on the other reflectors.  |  IP: Logged Gordon McLeod Film God Posts: 9532 From: Toronto Ontario Canada Registered: Jun 99 posted 12-31-2003 10:11 PM                     On the issue of time in screening rooms and faults not showing up One must also remember that some products age once first used on a time scale basis not just use basis So warranty's are a double edged sword in that respect Also most of the flaking ones I have come across have had the lamp even for a few seconds too far back in the reflector when some one had changed it When I change a lamp i always crank it as far forward as possible then when lit move backwards Also ORC/Perkin Elmer lamps have also had issues with many reflectors as they seem to radiate far more IR than any other brand per watt  |  IP: Logged
