Marcus has been changing the projectors in the UltraScreen houses to Kinoton 50D's and 60D's, replacing A's, JJ's, and Simplexes with normal and hi-speed movements. I believe they are quite happy with the image quality now.
I recently visited Appleton, Madison (the largest of them I believe) and Waukesha WI. I found the picture quality quite good with Schneider test film (J=1/2 of one of the narrow center horizontal dimension lines, F= 80 LP Ctr. in 1:2.40). Of course the widely discussed dimunition in print stability shows up very obviously with this much magnification.
Subjectively, with a print of XXX, the rear half of the house provided a very exciting experience with comfortable viewing. IMHO, as one gets closer than the midpoint of the seating the image gets a bit overwhelming and the print movement becomes noticeable. This might be less of an issue in 1:1.85. Although I wasn't really paying attention to the sound systems other than the DD error numbers, the sound was subjectively very nice for this feature, with good intelligibility.
Basically, I really enjoyed the viewing experience I had, and those nearby seemed to as well.

Larry,
Do you know when this change happened in their Waukesha location?
I attended the second show of Sahara on opening day (4/8/2005) and it exhibited distracting amounts of weave to the point where the subtitles and credits were difficult to read. We were in the middle of the row about 1/2 way back, and couldn't get out without climbing over lots of people, so we put up with it.
Complaining to the suit watching the cleaners didn't do much good, as he said that they hadn't gotten any complaints but would check on it. The comment card I filled out went unanswered, so I doubt that it matters to anyone.
Unrelated to the weave but still related to the quality of the presentation, the lights never kicked down from the preshow level (they go down to around 50% when the pre-show starts, and then notch down when the movie begins).
All I could think about during the first half of the movie is how nice it will look when it comes out on DVD... not exactly what you want as the lasting impression if you're a theater!
This experience reminded me of why I don't go to the Waukesha UltraScreen. I imagine this is because it was a retrofit of what used to be a nice screen in its own right, but was never intended to support the width they are projecting. Hopefully, their planned replacement theater (the "Majestic") will correct that problem.
