Posts: 12814 From: Annapolis, MD Registered: Dec 1999 posted 02-22-2004 09:24 PM                     Mark, The projectors that I've checked bad 35-PA test film on are: Simplex X-L (and 35) Simplex E-7 Kinoton FP-20 Kionton FP-30E Century SA Century JJ Norelco DP-70 I've had litterally hundreds, if not thousands of feet of junk 35-PA...in fact the most recent batch has had any value as an image steadiness test. I've had Stan D even shoot it at 1/2 speed for me with no decernable improvement...it is always the film. There has been part of a resignation that it is just the "quality" of the 35-PA stock and nothing can be done about it. Stan D. had measured it and found the problem long before I called him. I believe both 35-IQ and Schneider CLT are on AGFA stock. I've yet to have a bad batch either but have used them much less. I use 35-PA for plate cutting and checking targets and chormatic abberations but Schneider test film if I really want to know about projector steadiness. The double exposure test does not test the perforations if it is a pin registered camera since the film will be registered to mis punched perfs...it will only show up when a non-registered device (projector) uses a difference reference. Steve  |  IP: Logged Ian Bailey Master Film Handler Posts: 317 From: Nambucca Heads, Australia Registered: Jun 2003 posted 02-23-2004 06:24 AM                     I buy 6 foot lenghts of 35-PA and make a loop to run it through the projector(you have to be careful it doesn't get caught on anything).I find it very fragile and it usually doesn't last very long.Is this the correct way to use it and can you buy rolls of it as I feel it is a bit expensive in 6 foot lengths.  |  IP: Logged John Pytlak Film God Posts: 9987 From: Rochester, NY 14650-1922 Registered: Jan 2000 posted 02-23-2004 07:33 AM                        Short loops are fine for checking the dimensions of the projected image area (i.e., filing aperture plates and setting screen masking). But they should NOT be used for critical evaluation of resolution or steadiness, as they wear out from hundreds of passes, and short loops heat to the point that focus performance is not typical of norman projection. If you can "loop" the 50 foot length over several rollers, keeping it off the floor and clean, it should be very suitable for any of the testing. Do replace it when the perforations show wear. Put leaders on the 200 foot length, and running as a roll gives more than 2 minutes on screen to do any evaluation. Always wind 35-PA on the largest core or reel hub available to avoid any issues with "core-set" or "clockspringing".  |  IP: Logged
