We used at one time Mogami for audio rack work but we found it harder to work labor wise and after a few years in service, it would start to change value or fail.
I agree that it is labor intensive and Mogami will generally go faster if you use a solder pot to tin the wires first but its well worth the effort if the budget will allow it. Ditto for Canaire wire products but they are alot easier to use than Mogami. I just tore down the DP-70's that were removed from the Stag Theatre and the mag heads were wired with What appeared to be either Mogami or Canaire cable. I think that theatre had the lowest noise floor of its mag electronics in any location I've ever been in.

Richard, I don't know why you would have experienced alot of failures with it as thusands of recording studios use Mogami throughout. I've rebuilt countless pieces of high end audio electrionics using Mogami products.

I also think West Penn sucks big time... Steve and I agree that no two rolls are alike, that might even be an understatement. But if you pay cheap prices you get crap no matter what. Belden or GEPCO have always been my minimm standards for audio wire.

Is anyone out there actually using ribbon cable for audio rack wiring? My boss has taken to doing it this way on several of the last large jobs we've done and it is something that I vehmently disagree with him about. Wiring an audio rack this way is about as wrong as it gets in my book. The part I dislike is the complete lack of any shielding and the generally inferior quality of the copper wire used in ribbon cable... at least he hopes its actually copper but some of it that I've seen doesn't appear to be......

Studio situations usually are more controlled than a typical cinema enviroment. Our local market and most export we have worked in are in high humidity situations; even with pot tinning we would have some corrosion and brittleness factors to deal with with age. Canare is easier than Mogami to work with in the very few times we put it to use. funny that Belden and West Penn are owned by the same parent company....some of the cables vary as much as 1/3 in pricing between the two. Ribbons have become more popular due to companies such as DTS...they have their place in certain situations. We used in a couple of jobs, ribbon cable in a shielded PVC jacket that we would fan out at each connection end to crimp connectors...again looked neat, worked well but labor and cost was not worth the use.

Update: I have installed the red reader in the SH-1000 soundhead and it has been aligned and works great. My question is: there is a pair of male prongs on the DC-side of the ASR40's power supply, where you connect a female plug to which would be attached the leads to a simple on/off switch if you wanted to be able to turn off the LED, when feasible, to preserve it's life. I thought the connector or female plug would be in the box with the other connectors, the power supply, the reader, etc., but it was not. I called CE and was told that this plug is NOT usually included in the package. A tech-friend said one was in a package with the unit he installed...can anyone verify what is correct here? I would like to connect a switch...if it is truly NOT offered by CE, can anyone recommend a standard size/model number plug I could pick up from a Radio Shack or Mouser for this purpose? (One that would fit in the opening this CE power supply allows?) Thanks!

Justin:
A little too late ,perhaps, but why did`nt you purchase the superior reader from BACP. Many less problems.

Brad: Thanks for that suggestion...I can do that!

Bob: Well, really, I haven't noticed any problems with this model or make (beyond this connector issue). Everything seems to work fine with the unit that is already wired and focused, so... and it came at a reasonable price with good evaluations from other users. It would not hurt to describe or direct readers to a site to check out this other make, though, for others to consider. Thanks to both!

The design difference between the 30 delux and 40 economy is that the lens in the 30 is screw fitted to the case versus press fit on the 40. The 30 circuit board has more mechanical adjustments. The 40 appears to be a good performer for the price and is being used on the new Simplex Apogee projector.
