At the Ritz, there is a combination of both operator and non-operator side platter installations. I found that I could thread non-operator slightly faster, but both were painless.
Because there is no 'lower magazine first' return common to all decks, and no 'down, then up' payout path, threading is that much faster. My only gripe is the one Steve mentioned: when the platter is on the operator side and you are taking up on the bottom deck, during threading there is nothing to keep the film on the rollers. Once you take up the tension, then you have to make another trip around the platter to seat the film correctly. This last point isn't an issue with non-operator side installs - the film seats itself.
I would like to hear what Gordon, Steve and others think about the Kinoton make-up table (the new ones that synchronise table and platter control). I feel it is the make-up table that needed to happen, but for some reason, until now...hasn't.
