Joshua,

Here you will find the parts manual on the Simplex XL systems...including the penthouses. Note, this a largish download. But the scan is quite good and bookmarked.

I don't believe the adapter plates are in it as the transition items (things that mate various parts) are something Simplex seemingly has always hid! Often they would show up in a Operation Manual rather than in a parts manual. Furthermore, you have to find the right manual. For instance, the pully/gear to mate an XL up to a optical soundhead like the SH-1012 or even the 5-star...which manual do those parts show up in?

On the issue of Simplex Penthouses
was there a difference to the threading and parts of the original Simplex Penthouse that had the curved top that the magazine sat into and the square box from Strong

I guess I got lucky.
I don't recall having any problems mounting the Simplex
Mag Penthouse to my personal XL several years ago.

Four holes in the penhouse and projector castings lined up perfectly.

My installation also includes a steam-pressure guage!

Will the mag unit just mount to the top of the projection head or do I need a mounting bracket?
It sure is heavey too.

You should see the flywheel in a Vic 8 70mm mag p/house, I'm surprised these things didn't pull the whole projector over!

Remember that the XL mag head and the XL always mated perfectly with each other. That mag head required adapter plates to fit anything else. We once had several XL mag head installed on Centurys. BTW: the path length had to accommodate the audio pre-delay to match audio with video; different for each projector. Louis

The circa 1972 Century SA in the biggest auditorium at the South Plains Cinema had one of these magnetic penthouses mounted on top.
The penthouse was removed in 1987 by Ben Kehe after we complained about scratching on the prints: He intentionally misthreaded the penthouse with a new trailer and compared it to the print and that's when we discovered one of the other booth people had been mis-threading through that penthouse. "You don't need that penthouse anyway."

(the little battery LED lantern hanging on the back of the penthouse adds an interesting touch to Jim's setup... [Big Grin] )

It's great to see projectionists having fun with their trade...

Thanks for the link to that manual Steve. I have the old black XL's and they do not just mount to the mag heads. There is definitely a bracket missing. If I can get a part number then maybe I can look around for the brackets that I need. Hopefully some theater supply somewhere has a few of them laying around.

X-L mag heads come in two basic versions. A smaller one and the first ones made by GPL with sprocket shoes and the larger one with sprocket rollers. The roller heads were the most common. Both work fine. Most Portland theatres used X-L mag and I never had a problem with them.

These mag heads were made for X-L projectors and use a four screw pattern on top of the projector and the X-L upper magazine. All other combinations need adaptor plates both top and bottom. Even other Simplex models need adaptors. Simplex also did not have adjustable rollers for sound sync as most other mag heads did so adaptor height was critical. One needs the correct plate for your projector. Should be lots of these laying around.

If you are using a X-L upper magazine then you are all set or have a newer Simplex 35. Newer machines have both sets of holes on top. There were adaptor plates to convert the X-L four screw top to the standard two screw upper mounts. These are shown in the X-L manual for numbers.

Non X-L mag heads need an adaptor to convert the four hole mount to standard two screw or possible adaptor plate made for that mag head. X-L mag to Century projector needed one.

If memory serves:
Some Ampex heads also needed adaptors.
Westrex R9 mag heads used the same plug in clusters as the X-L.

If the top of the penthouse does not have the standard 2-hole pattern (3/8")...then they can be added by merely drilling and tapping. Note, the standard Simplex XL top plate (P-1839) is not correct for the penthouses as it will interfere with the outer casing of the penthouse...however a hacksaw (band saw...etc) can make it work...but drilling/tapping is easier, in my opinion.

If I happen upon the proper top plate, I'll post it.
