someone like Spielberg, who has a hard on for DTS, COULD in theory license ES on the DTS track, and then mix the track down to 5.1 for the SRD crowd and screw them out of EX
You still don't get it. Both formats DO MIX DOWN TO 5.1 because the third channel is matrixed into the 2 standard surrounds.
Brad is right. There is no difference between the two, whatever it says on the film cans or anywhere else. The whole discussion is just as pointless as the SR/SRD vs. SRD thing.

Actually this discussion is even less pointless then the SRD vs. DTS discussion. At least in that discussion the true "best processor" was revealed.

I said SR/SRD vs. SRD not DTS! I meant the whole which-is-the-right-abbreviation discussion (when everybody really should know it's simply SRD or more elaborate SR*D).

I think using the term "Brand X Surround Decoding" should cover just about all of them....
This is actually something I suggested to the folks at Dolby and DTS years ago. Something generic like an "Extended Surround" notation in the stack ads would have made the concept easier to advertise.

It's already a complicated thing for newspaper stack ad builders to keep track of three different kinds of symbol "dingbats" to denote Dolby Digital, DTS and SDDS. They could barely handle noting the difference between Dolby Stereo, SR and 70mm mag back in the 1980s.

Flash forward to 1999. You're going to add separate Dolby•EX and DTS-ES (or even Circle Surround or whatever else) logos to the mix? It just could not fly, especially when theaters could confuse the situation further to a horrible extreme by hooking up a DTS-ES unit to a Dolby Digital system or a Dolby SA-10 to a DTS equipped rig. How the hell do you advertise that? Even worse, how do you keep that straight when many theaters have more than one print and sometime have different prints playing in different formats? I don't like it that most movie-going markets don't do anything anymore to denote digital sound formats and such. But I can understand why they got fed up with it and quit providing the information. In my opinion, I still think it is information at least a few customers find important. At the very least, they like the warm fuzzies they get when they know a theater they're visiting is equipped well (and hopefully well maintained).

And yes EX and EX is the same damn thing and NO there has not been a difference ever, nor should there ever be.

Did anyone ever suspect that we spent all that hard earned cash on EX cp650's/DTS-ES just so home theatre amps could be marketed/marked up.

I do get it. Maybe I didn't state my point properly. Either there are three matrixed channels on the two surround channels, or there's not. My point is its possible to mix one format one way (with the three channel matrix on the two channels) and mix the other format the other way (two standard surrounds without the third matrixed in). Just like it's possible the DTS track could be 5.1 channels, and the SRD track could be mono. Hardly likely, I'll grant you, but technically possible.

The whole point of FITA is to note the technical specs of the film for the folks who will be showing it. Whether or not "technically possible" is a good enough reason to allow both to be noted in FITA is a call for Brad. If he says it's not, then it's not.

OK, so DTS sucks the subs off the combined surround channel like format 43 did. Inevitably there is some sub info on the surrounds (and the surround on the sub), at around (I think) 200hz. So surely there IS a difference - any of this crosstalk will pile up on the rear wall in DTS-ES, whereas this would be fed to the sub only on SRD.. Monitor the subs or surrounds if you dont believe me - for example (a long time ago) the helicopters in True Lies were recorded on the sub alone. IN DTS the whole theatre resounds with them, in SRD only the sub is alive.. Mind you, have never had to change a disk drive in a DA20 ..
