"Maya-" would work if my name rhymed with that of a famous American wiener maker. But my family adopted the pronunciation that rhymes with "mayor" as in the head public official of a municipality. When I was in Saturday Japanese elementary school in LA in the '60s, they used "Me-ya". When I started taking Japanese in college, the professor changed it to "Meiya-". And when I had Japanese business cards made, I didn't specify the transliteration I wanted, so the printer came up with "Mea-". The Japanese pronunciation of "seat" is "sheat", so the closest wrong term is "sheet" for them. I like these kind of mistakes commonly available in Japanese and Chinese documents.
