There are no currently certified THX screens in NYC. It's probably not an issue of the screens not meeting specs, but the reluctance of the chains to pay for renewal.

I don't know the dates of when those NYC screens originally went THX, but I do know which screens they were:
Loew’s Lincoln Square: Screen #1 (Loews)
Loew’s Orpheum: Screen #7
Loew’s Village 7: Screen #3
UA Union Square 14: Screens #3 and #8
Chelsea Cinema #9: Screens #6 and #7
AMC Bay Plaza (Bronx): Screen #1

Also, the now gone Worldwide had one screen that was THX.
Out of all of these, the only one which ever felt sounded any good (and still does) is the Lincoln Square, but the curved screen there bothers me – there’s lots of distortion - straight horizons appear curved.

I remember the Worldwide Cinemas. Not too long after it opened in the late 1980's it was turned into a 2nd run showplace, in part due to a fairly lousy location. It was west of Times Square away from lots of customer traffic.

A couple of my closest friends are flying to New York City next week to attend a wedding. They're going to be in town for four or five days. Anyway, I told them they ought to see a movie at the Ziegfeld theater. Honestly though, what are the best movie theaters in Manhattan? Is there something better to recommend than the Ziegfeld?

The former Worldwide Cinemas is now an off-Broadway playhouse complex. I think it is three stages out of the six cinemas.

The best overall experience is still the Ziegfeld, IMO. They might also like to try the Loews Lincoln Square, especially screen #1, in spite of my above reservations about the curved screen. Very nice multiplex with huge murals and a plaque outside each screen with info about its original namesake theatre. Sound in screen #1 is quite good.

Loew's Kips Bay screen #10 has a 62' screen. Loew's E-Walk (42nd st.) screens #12 and #13 also have 62' screens and a lobby designed by David Rockwell. The AMC Empire 25 across the street has a lobby largely comprised of the original 1912 Empire.

I'm surprised the one in the Bronx is still certified. Note that there are none in Manhattan. I think that's an embarrassment to both THX and the chains.

We've always found HVAC noise easier to control in smaller rooms - larger rooms tend to swallow the noise better (plus from a THX point of view the mics are further away from the sources) and the plant can be located remotely. I agree with Gordon - larger ducts, or better a displacement intake, help. Reverb is the pig in a large old room..
