I had a similar experience to that when a Digibeta tape had the same short 'film' twice, first letterboxed, second anamorphic. The feature had the same timecode in both versions.

Well thanks to Scott's revelation that the video gear is often donated / sponsored, that changes my earlier post entirely!

BTW John I couldn't agree with you more, it has been my experience over here as well. I've really noticed that the genuine people are those with an inherent respect for the mechanics of projection, indeed be it film, video or digital.

There's a real need to somehow get a handle on the whole festival situation (and that is no comment on those who are doing the very best they can).

Frank's methods are a great starting point. Could we draft up some kind of Guide / Standard for festival projection which could be circulated to the various associations that individual festivals are members of?

Recognising that the unique pressures and working practices of festivals are a different animal to standard operation.

A "Guide" sounds a bit friendlier than a Standard, and in any case a single Standard is probably unworkable.

Also, there doesn't have to be one over-arching "Guide". You can have one for the US, one for Europe, one for Australia, etc. etc.

I'm willing to do some work on it this end, let's pool the incredible expertise always on display here on Film-Tech!
