He knows I'm kidding. Frank and I go back several years. This is certainly not the first time I've joked about him being 'the only non-union projectionist ever to "survive" in the city of New York.' And I'm sure I've not heard the last from him about my "digital film" adventures, or any number of drive-in related issues - which we could jointly write a book about. I never even met the guy who worked the booth so I can't imagine that if it is conspiracy it is anything personal, but it might be against the theatre's non-union status. But if as you say it was not deliberate then help me here, what problem can you come up that could happen in the soundhead were the quick fix would be to defocus the slit-lens? And if an operator knew how to loosen the set screw so he could turn the focusing knob, assuming the film was somehow riding off the sound drum, why was he not smart enough to realise that he could seriously damage the print running it that way? Why didn't he just stop the show to run it on the second projector? And assuming this all happened while the show was running, how does one break off a set-screw and chisel away at the thumb-latch while the film is running in the projector? I just don't see any logical scenario here. And if you know of any other non-union projectionists in NYC, please let me know....I've been looking for one for years as a relief operator for this particular venue that I can rely on so I am not the sole operator.
