Author Topic: Amp situation critical Steven J Hart Master Film Handler Posts: 282 From: WALES, ND, USA Registered: Mar 2004 posted 08-17-2005 07:51 AM                        Heath, I wonder if the problem with your bgw amps could be as simple as dirty contacts on the speaker protection relays. This could explain why tapping on the chassis of the amp fixes the problem. I've run into this problem several times with other brands of amps. Try running them up and down a few times and see if this clears it up. If dirty they will have to be cleaned tith some Pro Gold contact cleaner. Actually Don, After Brian passed on his wife Barbra Wachner gave it a real good go and didn't allow any major compromise on the quality end of things. It was a difficult battle though for the company with the comming of the Taiwanese and Chinese amps. I also feel that the Millenneum amps were a part of the downfall of BGW, its a real poor design and real goofy output stage that couldn't use a floating ground. Had they come up with a better design they might very well still be going strong today. At least it doesn't appear that the M2200 subwoofer has been changed very much but I'd want to see the inside first to check for any made in China crap before I would sell any of them again. I was involved with Brian Wachner since BGW appeared in the Chinago area in 1973. He was truely a great engineer that would never compromise quality for price!! I knew him well and when Dolby went into the racking business he was my first choice for Amps. He raised the standard net price of the Amp we chose from $425 to $515 only three days after agreeing to hold the price a minimum of 120 days. I had already done my proposals to AMC/NCS and had to come back from my vacation and start all over again. I had anticipated this move as this tactic was vintage Brian and took the precaution of visiting the QSC plant just in case. We switched our order to QSC, the industry largely followed and that was the begining of the end of BGW as a major player. Donno Sam, Have to kinda chickle at that a bit because Brian always lowered their pricing to me substantially when competition attempted to squash my pricing. Perhaps he didn't like the guys that ran MTS..... YOU call that a sound system.... I don't! They supposedly have a special amp all of their own but I never thought too much of that model amp anyway.... that amp is what REALLY brought BGW down.
