Two years ago I ran a beautiful new print with SRD -- not a splice in it and heads and tails unspliced. But it was a studio print; they were only letting it out at that time to change-over booths using only 2000' reels. Stereo over-rated? For a MUSICAL like WSS? I mean, I can't argue with your own personal preference if stereo doesn't do much for you, but come on -- audiences should see these classics the way they were intended. Personally, stereo for me totally rocks -- it is painful for me when I know something was recorded in stereo and I can't present it that way -- for me, it is a major enhancement over mono. Admittedly, while stereo doesn't prevent you from "seeing the movie," if that's the only criteria that determines what's acceptable, then any number of other compromises will let you see the movie -- but I think most exhibitors strive to get presentation to be as true to the original work as possible. I suppose you could apply that minimal is OK philosophy to, say, scope presentation. One could say they think wide aspect ratio is "over-rated," but I think most people would decry running a scan & pan TV print instead of a scope print as being an unacceptable compromise, even though you might say that it still "looks like a movie."
