I actually spray my trash bags with a squirt of FG when putting them out at the street for pickup the next morning. It has completely stopped the neighborhood dogs from tearing into them and spreading the garbage all over the yard.

A 5# bag of dry dog food soaked in a gallon of automobile antifreeze will do the same trick but you'll only ever have to do it once! [Big Grin]

What?!! The bottle FELL and dumped all over that bag of dog food! I was just throwing it away with the rest of the garbage!
Honest!! [Wink]

I seem to recall reading that you could just toss a Hershey chocolate bar over the fence for the same effect. [evil]

It would have to be baking chocolate. Regular chocolate doesn't have enough theobromine in it. (Theorbromine is the substance in chocolate that people mistake for caffeine. Caffeine doesn't usually occur naturally in chocolate.)

Antifreeze tends short circuit an animal's sense of satiation, causing the animal to gorge itself. Chocolate can have that effect on animals but there often isn't enough of it to do the job.

Second, there is no antidote for antifreeze. The vet can pump the animal's stomach and administer agents to absorb the poison from the system but once the stuff gets into the bloodstream the liver begins to convert it into deadly poison. If the animal isn't taken to the vet in about a half hour, it will surely die.

Thanks Randy for that Chemistry lesson!! Now I can make fun of all my Mormon friends that say they don't "do" chocolate because of the caffene it contains. I just may have T-Shirts printed up for them to wear around and help quell that bit of lore.... [Smile] Oddly... there are more chocolate candy factories here than anywhere else I've been to [Roll Eyes] .

Theobromine is a relative of caffeine but it is not caffeine. They are two distinct substances.

Wikipedia article: Theorbomine

quote:

Theobromine is a bitter alkaloid of the methylxanthine family, which also includes the similar compounds theophylline and caffeine. Despite its name, the compound contains no bromine — theobromine is derived from Theobroma, the genus of the cacao tree, which is composed of the Greek roots theo ("God") and broma ("food"), meaning "food of the gods".

It is the primary alkaloid found in cocoa and chocolate, and is one of the causes for chocolate's mood-elevating effects. The amount found in chocolate is small enough that chocolate can be safely consumed by humans in large quantities, but animals that metabolize theobromine more slowly, such as cats and dogs, can easily consume enough chocolate to cause chocolate poisoning.

Theobromine is a stimulant frequently confused with caffeine. Theobromine has very different effects on the human body from caffeine; it is a mild, lasting stimulant with a mood improving effect, whereas caffeine has a strong, immediate effect and increases stress.

In medicine, it is used as a diuretic, vasodilator, and myocardial stimulant. Scientists have recently discovered that theobromine has an antitussive effect superior to codeine by suppressing vagus nerve activity.[1]

Theobromine is known to induce gene mutations in lower eukaryotes and bacteria. At the time of a 1997 report by the IARC, mutations had not been found in higher eukaryotes, such as humans,[2] but in 1999 the SAX dangerous properties and environmental fate handbook reported human mutations. Theobromine is used as an experimental teratogen in mice and rabbits.[3]

LOL - Wish I did that to our neighbor's dog after I sent the owners to court twice for disturbing my family's peace a couple of years ago.

Have to remember the FG trick on the trash thing though.

In my case, it was raccoons and opossums getting into the garbage. It wasn't until after they tore the bags open that the dogs and cats started getting into it.

Once I put the antifreeze out with the garbage, the whole problem stopped. I haven't had a problem in over two years.

None of my neighbors have dogs that are allowed to roam. There used to be about a half dozen cats roaming around here but the coyotes got most of them. The only two cats left are the ones that the owners keep in at night.

So, err, aren't there regulatory issues here (both in terms of checmical disposal, as well as in terms of what you can do to animals in your community)? [Not to mention the moral issues...]

Maybe I should put out a small bowl of antifreeze for the damn cat that has taken roost outside my door as of late..

We don't feed it, yet it continues to linger around. Out of 150+ houses in my 'hood, this black bitch picks MY dirveway to hang out in.

I feel bad for the cat becuase, obviously, the piece of shit who bought it, or the female it was spawned from, cares little about them to begin with, else it would be indoors, where it belongs.

Because someone else isn't considerate enough to contain/control their own pet(s), I have to be the asshole who rids the neighborhood of at least one cat...

It's ironic how we'll have a thread about how some heartless guy/girl threw a dog out of a speeding car, or how some teenagers put firecrackers up their cats butt for fun, and everyone here crys out "Kill the bastards!", but here we have a discussion of how to get rid of animals with chemicals and such... nice.

I'll chime on the dog thingey then end:

When I was 12, riding my bike down the country lane to the store, the neighbor down the road had a dog who hates kids on bicycles for some STUPID reason.

I happened to be one of them MINDING MY OWN FRIKKEN BUSINESS!

On the way to the store, the animal (doberman) following me, barking at me like he had my number like a bad disease. Then on the way back to the store, the dog figured that he had enough of me, jumped up, grabbed me by the leg and yanked me off the bicycle ripping my leg open pretty bad.

NOW, the question is here: WHAT THE FRIK DID I DO TO DESERVE THIS PUNISHMENT? If I did something that I shouldn't have, then I can see it. But minding my own business like a good civilized individual (as it was apparent that this dog wasn't civilized..) just couldn't rectify the reason for the attack outside of poor owner handling, discipline and training.

This insident was pretty tramatic for me that had never experienced such a violent insident before and which was tee-totally uncalled for.

This HUGE CROCK of BS about "Man's Best Friend" should include "only to the owners, but strangers, you are their enemies..!"

Well, I still came out of the end okey. My father's lawsuit to the dog owner paid for my college education and then some, and the owner had his dog destroyed by order of the court.

Sorry, I quit now, but had to vent on this side topic ...

Back on topic: A print that came in tonite was edged marked for 6 feet on each end with "aluminum paint" of all things and rather sloppily placed on the film. Good ol' FG soaked on a corner of a rag, took that aluminum paint off very nicely.

thx-Monte

Monte,
Ultimately an animal like that is a hazard to the safety of the public and anyone the owner brings into its house.
In that case I'd say that pooch got what it had coming to it. As a kid on a bike I kicked my fair share of canine ass (quite litterally) from behind my bike.
When it comes to stray cats or dogs I'd have to say call the pound.
I'd rather have the animal destroyed humanely if it's not being taken care of than by poisoning it and leaving it to die on the side of the road somewhere or worse get hit by a car.

Though I like most animals anyway, I'm a big pussy that way [Smile]

I'm sorry. I've just been in the mood for throwing rhetorical hand grenades for the last few days.

I wouldn't really kill a dog or cat like that.

But I'm not above poisoning varmints that are causing property damage and messing up the garbage cans. You just have to make sure that the poison targets the varmints and not peoples' pets.
(Like the way you put rat poison in a tamper proof box.)

** Back on target **

We have some old asphalt tile floor in the bathroom of our house that are dried out and cracked. It will be some time before we can save up enough to remodel the bathroom the way we want it.

Until then, a little FG on a sponge then wiped into the tile will rejuvenate it enough to be presentable until we can do the remodel.

You just have to make sure you let it soak in and clean up the excess or else it will get slippery.
