I was training a guy to run changeovers a few years ago, and he had this great idea that instead of watching for the cue marks he would just time the reels with his stopwatch. I told him not to, that it wouldn't work, etc, and he agreed, but being something of an ass he didn't take my advice. I was in the booth with him, watching over his shoulder, as the motor cue hit. A few seconds later I began saying, over and over, with increasing urgency, "start the motor. start the motor. START THE F***ING MOTOR!" But he wasn't paying attention, rather, he was staring at his stopwatch convinced he had another 20 seconds to go. After the tail ran through, and he treated the audience to a nice countdown leader, he got the point.
