I cannot believe the way Mark has been treated by some on this site. We should be encouraging enthusiastic newcomers not slagging them off. Ok, he should not have used words like tinkering etc, but I am sure he knows that now. He admits he has no experience, but he is enthusiastic and willing to learn. Does that not sound like most of us when we first asked for a job?, so come on give the guy a break. Only Mark himself will find out whether he is suited for the job-If he isn't,at least he would have given it a shot. Mark! your computer knowledge WILL be beneficial, as a logical mind is needed in this kind of job and lets face it, its going to be all programming computers anyway in a few years. Just one word of advice if you do get a trainee's position, NEVER assume you know it all after only a few months and always respect and be willing to learn from those who have been in this business a long time. If you have that attitude and are willing to work hard for crap money, you should be ok. either way let us know how you get on, even if its not job you hoped it would be. Good luck.

quote: Frank Dubrois OR will you be rude and arrogant looking down the end of your nose at these mere PEONS who know nothing about projection?
Ah, so like many of the replies in this thread. Right. Now at what point did I act like I know how to work a projection booth just because I know a good presentation when I see it?
quote: Frank Dubrois So what?!? You haven't given us anything here to even remotely beleive you know ANYTHING about the real world of projection.
Do you think I'm here to learn about knitting? Why else would I be here? That's why I'd like to be trained my friend. At one point here I'm told they want a "blank slate" to train, who knows absolutely nothing about it (and I'm sure enthusiasm and interest in the job like mine can't hurt)... and then you write something like that. Which is it then?
quote: Frank Dubrois I DO encourage new comers and people who want to learn about projection, but not if they come in with an attitude like yours.
If you consider only mentioning that I have a good amount of knowledge in home theater technology and not putting up with personal insults an "attitude," you're the one who needs thicker skin.
quote: Frank Dubrois I think the Majestic deserves better than an arrogant kid like you for their first projectionist.
I'll probably be the 3rd or 4th. I'll be working my way up from the floor staff.
quote: Frank Dubrois Your all ready to blow off this site because of some honest answers...well, good luck to you, because without this site, you will truely be lost. This is your best source of info.
Film-Tech hasn't been deleted from my bookmarks toolbar yet. But negative posts like yours are making me strongly consider either that, or turning into a lurker.

quote: Alex Grueneberg Because honestly guys. Its people like Mark I'd want in my booth, because I'm stuck with someone who just wants a paycheck and to get away from customers and do the bare minimum.
I've had that type in my booth. Adjusting things to his own personal standards. Tinkering and putzing around with stuff until he breaks it. You like the type? You can hire the type.

This is true, a TRUELY blank slate is good. A blank slate withing the organization (ground floor) is even better. YOU are not a blank slate. I think you went into this with many assumptions and preconceptions. I can't put my finger on it, but you simply come off as the type of person that will only learn the information he feels is pertinent to the job. We are just telling you what we know and what we feel. Those are our OPINIONS. You asked for them. you didn't put any restrictions on our opinions as to what you DO want to hear and what you dont. You either want to know what the job is all about or you don't. You couldnt come to a better place to find out, and you did, now your not happy. This site is populated with projectionists, managment, general workers, business owners and technicians (probably more, but just keeping the list short), so if you wanted the best, most honest opinions, this was the place to come. Sorry that the all of the opinions didn't conform to what you wanted to hear. Personally, if you have a passion for the job and want to do this long term, then I hope you get it, learn it, and make that a great movie experience for the patrons.

In that case, you would never hire anyone who expresses any interest in putting on a great presentation, with any idea whatsoever of what a correctly focused image looks like, or what to listen for if there's issues with the sound system. If a lot of managers hire like you, that would explain a lot of the shitty presentations I consistently see around here.
I find it funny that you just posted this in another thread, while saying you'd not hire me since I'm so interested in a good presentation I might be a "tinker."
quote: Hire as many crappy workers as you can, keep them for the summer, then fire them before they get a raise... We don't get good employees that care because corporate America doesnt care about quality, only the bottom line. One well trained, high quality, caring employee can do the work of 2 slackers, easily. You do the math. Obviously this cant be explained to accountants, but its truth.

My point is, other than being a movie going customer, what the hell do you know about PUTTING ON a good presentation. NOTHING. A five year old can tell when a picture is out of focus, my guess is, at this point, the five year old would know about as much as you do as how to fix it. You come off thinking you know all about how to put on a great presentation...you know JACK. You know how to turn on your TV, put in a DVD, and turn on your stereo. Big deal. Dolby Digital and DTS are freakin MENU selections to you.....
As for the other post, you didn't understand, so I won't bother explaining.
