A "disconnect" removes the (2 leads in single phase or 3 leads of 3 phase)load from the power network. Both have the same effect, removing power from the load but the "disconnect" removes all connection to the net. (Earth or Ground, the Green wire must remain connected) Some electrical codes may require a "disconnect" be placed in the source of power to rotating machinery and that "disconnect" must be located near the machine. The manual power "disconnect" on older installations was the motor switch. When wired into automation systems, this manual power "disconnect" is left in the circuit with the motor to meet the code requirement. In case of an automation failure, the motor can be manually stopped and safely "disconnected" by that method.  |  IP: Logged
