Damn. We run a Christie booth with a few Sony's tossed in to really spice things up. Most of the drive-ins in this area were equipped with Century equipment. The lubrication requirements were very different from the Brenkerts at the indoor. Of course, the Brenkerts were lubricated by oil bath. That in itself injected the smell of oil into the booth, plus they were notoriously bad to leak. We set a catch pan on the floor below to catch the leaking oil, which was quite a bit. That booth really smelled of used oil until the Brenkerts were retired and replaced by Simplex's. The Century's used very little lubrication, it was measured in a drop here or there on each fiber gear once a week. Back in the day of carbon lighting, we always had the smell of the rectifiers heating up. We also used mercury vapor rectifiers at one theatre. These were heated all the time you were operating to keep the mercury vaporized, and had a very distinct smell. The drive-in booths, being located beside or above the concession stand really pulled some great food smells through the ventilation system. I really loved it when they threw a few onions on the grill... aahhhhh!! Great memories!  |  IP: Logged
