I recently visited a very dear friend who moved to the Faroe Islands, in preparation for which I bought 'The Rough Guide Phrasebook - Danish'. I needn't have bothered - the indigenous language is really Faroese, which is effectively a dialect of Icelandic (not to mention fluent English, the technical accuracy of which would embarrass most natives of England). Danish is, as far as I've been told, very cruel to understand for any foreigner. My german tech, when I complain over my german or english, allways comforts me, telling me, that my german is better than his danish... My post for Thomas was especially cruel to outsiders, as it was filled with inside jokes, as was Thomas' start for this tread. I don't know if You are doing the same stuff, as we are in Denmark, telling the most horrible lies every year on april, 1st. As I do not know, if this is common in all Film-Tech nations, I am telling Thomas to be ashamed, doing this tread, and at the same time, asking him wheater his is going to stay in Copenhagen Imperial theatre 24/7 for as long as the year's 70mm festival. If so, we should meet for "Sound of Music". And that's all... "SOM" was a brand-new 70mm DTS - pure joy to watch again, even after running it myself so very many times (latest was winter 1980). Below is how it translated the Danish. I don't doubt that it not perfect but the bulk of the meaning seems to come across: "You're a rogue and a villain, young man. Think to entice brave F Tere on something. Celebrating they possibly the first in the fourth over there as we do? Are you in the Imperial 24 / 7 end of the month? -In that case we'll see you Saturday for singing and music." What do you think, Per? By pure coincidence I was in Copenhagen only the week before last! I was just about starting to pick up the odd phrase on the TV by the time I left, but it was still a struggle. We do April fools here, too - here is one I posted on a film archivists' email list. In jokes: with reference to the name of the fictional Russian inventor, 'bugger off' is an insult in slang British English (basically, telling someone to go away and leave you alone, but in stronger language), while 'sozzled' means drunk.  |  IP: Logged Per Hauberg Jedi Master Film Handler Posts: 883 From: Malling, Denmark Registered: Jul 2000 posted 07-26-2011 04:52 PM                        Steve: Everything seems pretty close to, what I wrote in danish. -And the adjectives about my old friend Thomas are most precise ! ;-) Danish humor is (we think, at least) rather special, allthough not always looking as loveable to outsiders as is normally is meant. But most danes understand it, though, and noone takes anything too seroius. -Maybe except those many foreigners, coming here as covenience refugees, and trying to make our happy, little land as dark in mind as the places, they run away from. They don't want to understand us - they just want our goods. -And that, someday, will be the beginning of the Third World War. Hopefully, I won't be around any more, when the day comes !
