The 517's have better VCAs and outputs than the Cat 242. Back around the mid 90s I was running a custom modified CP50 in my screening room where I put a cat117 in the cat108 spare slot and did some backplane changes to create split surrounds with subwoofer. It worked like a charm and as others have noted, it was dead quite and sounded fantastic. Steve While I can agree with the possibility of the 517's VCA's being cleaner that the 242's, the CP-50 I had for a while (with all the upgrades) was NOT quieter that my current CP-65. Could have been a fluke, but all the CP-65's I have run into so far (including the one at UC Irvine) are very quiet. Mark: I had a CP-100 a long time ago...it was an impressive piece of gear for it's time. It suffered from Dolby's usual weak link, a crappy power supply. I've rarely seen them fail... only with age because of dried out caps. The VCA is npt too good... has a bad crossover notch at high frequencies. Retrofitting a newer style board is advisable. The power supply IS kinda hard to get at though.... One of the 100's I just picked up is serial number 83... Mark  |  IP: Logged Steve Guttag We forgot the crackers Gromit!!! Posts: 12814 From: Annapolis, MD Registered: Dec 1999 posted 02-06-2009 06:24 AM                     I wouldn't classify ANY of the Dolby CPs as quiet...they all have varying degrees of hiss or even hum to them. It is one reason I went to Panastereo for screening rooms and critical environments...the Pana is on the order of 10-12dB quieter. As for the Cat 242...it is notably noisier than the Cat 517. In fact, Dolby had a retro-fit for "studios" for the Cat 242 (I want to say it was the Cat 242SB)...it essentially removed the TDA series of VCA and using a daughterboard soldered to the pads of where the chip went..."That" corp VCAs were used instead.
