I guess we can safely assume that the anamorphic attachment was misadjusted or that there was dirt on a lens somewhere.

In which case, I suggest you get a baseball bat and keep in in the booth. The next time you see somebody fooling around with the adjustment on that lens you can take that bat and hit him upside the head with it!
