The effects was more realistic with greater depth. I still remember the first 3-D movie of the era, BWANA DEVIL when the 3-D made it look like an African tribesman was jabbing a spear into your face and a lion leaping out of the screen. All others simply are gimmiks just to pull of the 3D title. Even Avatar sucks in 3D (oh wait it sucks anyway). In-your-face effects ARE gimmicks. I'm much happier if the 3D is more subtle - and less eye-aching. Breaking the screen is not good 3D. I found Avatar's 3D very good, especially the live action parts. Scott Hicks Jack O. Dick Prather Jonathan Althaus ?????? I found no one that has seen it and thought it was inferior.
