sequential should work out just fine if not better (def easier than putting 17 peices of foil on a print). Think if it as 4 seperate shows instead of one show with 4 intermissions.

We ONLY use the random setting.

A key is to identify the "most used" cues. These you will designate as 1 or 2 or 3 cue strips.

As far as "showing on the screen," with a little forethought, (and with a reduced number of usual cues) they can fit on the frame line for flat or in a fade or at a scene change. Louis

I like "random" automations like the ta-10 where you are only putting small cues on the film on the frame line. Where you have to put more than one peice of cue tape across a whole frame is crazy in my opinion.

I think Chris probably has it: the cues are too close together. But I would think 14 feet would be enough. I don't think operating in sequential vs random will make a difference as the same resistor/ capacitor timing is used for both, but it's worth a try. Perhaps adding a few feet of black at the end of the intermission snipe will get the required time for the next cues to work.

When I was working on those, I found that each cue 'group' (1 to 8) must be within 750ms of each other. After that, the counter thinks there will be no more cues and toggles the selected relay. That is why I'm surprised it's not working for Celine. But, I never thought to test how close each group could be. The Maxi 12 doesn't have a cam timer; it's all IC's.

I think the circuit is actually a little clever. It's basically a serial to parallel kinda thing. Louis is right; a little forethought will reduce cues onscreen. How else would someone design a cue system with eight functions that's easy to apply? I'm sure Joe would agree, but his back still bothers him from lifting that Simplex! [Smile]

Celine, if you send me an email address, I will send you a newer Maxi12 manual than the one posted here. It doen't have any additional info for this cue issue, but is much better for general servicing.

Why not shoot it to Brad instead so that it actually makes its way onto the website?

No problem, but this way she can get it quicker.

I think John that possibly having multiple peices of foil cause the actual cue to be longer in length than it has to be maybe if the cues were a little shorter adding more time between them the extra second or two could allow enough time for the cam timer to cycle.

Right now, with a 2 1/2 hour film needing to be on three 6ks, and two intermissions, I am using a total of seventeen pieces of foil cues!
..wonder if someone can find her a double MUT, or an old CINE 2x or 4x reel tower then so one film can sit on a 13k reel and that would get rid of the "forced" intermissions, if her booth has limited spacing..

..or find a way where a platter system can be used down in the conc area and the film, via rollers, can head into the booth to the machine...

some thoughts ... - good luck - Monte

I like "random" in the fact that the cue can tell the automation what to do, but honestly sequential is best. A cue should never have to go in the image area, there's no way to prevent it from showing up onscreen unless you only play flat movies at your theater. Ideally it would reside on the inboard side (non-soundtrack) of the film on the SDDS track. The automation should be able to change the sequence easily and quickly, like the CA-21. And as long as we're at it, the cue detector should go ABOVE the projector, not below it. This would allow for frame-accurate cues. Want the cue to trigger when this exact frame is onscreen? No problem, just put a cue on that frame and it will! The cue detector would have a time delay like a digital reader. No more of this "counting back 18 feet from the last frame", that's just stupid.

Yes, Monte...we looked into a double MUT or reel tower, but too be honest, with the rewind table, the projector platform that was built in, and the tiny bit of storage for vacuum and ladder, I have all of about 3' by 5' left available of floor space. With either of those items in the booth, the booth would become unusable. Believe me, we consulted our supplier about it.

Hey Joe, I only have to go back ~3 ft to place my cues. The distance is marked on the rewind table so it makes it pretty easy to place them.

But, yes, yes, yes to the wishing it didn't show on screen. I see EVERYTHING, and even though I realize most of the audience doesn't notice some of the details we are referring to, I want our presentation to be up to the standards of most projectionists. Not the average audience member's standards. But, at this location (a converted store-front) I do the best with what we have. If we build a new location from scratch, our booth will be primo!!! ;-)

On the cues, could you place them on the frame lines so they wouldn't be so noticable, esp how thick "opticues" are?

I havw never worked with the ca 21 but the strong cna-200 uses sequential cues that can be programmed to perform any function via the computerized control screen (or from an external laptop that is connected to the system) Unfortunately they ruined it with the whole cue learn thing I think if they just left it where you could program each individual step without having to learn the cues they would have had a winner.

I think you can disable that stupid cue learn nonsense.

Of course the proper solution is to throw them all in the dumpster and replace them with CA21s.

Sean...if you LEAVE it in cue learn...it will function just like ANY sequential automation.
