We worked on a few 35mm reels of Technicolor 4trk mag of BEN HUR that had the beginnings of vinegar. Beautiful print if not for the warping and brittle. The problem was fear of it breaking in projection because of the brittleness. We soaked it in VitaFilm which cleans and softens. It did wonders for strenghtening and softening the base.

I mention this only because it might help with the brittleness of the mag film, plus the good thing absolutly will not hurt the mag oxide. The claim is it holds back the progression of acidosis -- I can't vouch for that as no way to tell since we didn't have a control reel; we weren't going to NOT treat a reel just to deterimine its efficacy on vinegar.
