If the player didn't receive timecode with the correct arrangement of serial number frames, the player would begin playback at the start of the reel and then drop out after a very short time. It would continue to read the timecode as valid but the disc wouldn't play.

The issue was only present on the discs with the .aue audio files. Any of the older .aud files would playback with no issue using the bog standard DTS timecode.

If memory serves, you also needed to have the ver 1.46 EEPROM on the timecode board for them to play but don't quote me on that.

Hi guys, I'm new here.

AUD/AUEs header specs:
Pos 75: print's optical noise reduction *
Pos 78: reel number
Pos 80-81: serial
Pos 82: number of channels
Pos 92-94: AUE key

* the format to switch back when dropping out of DTS:
value 00 Dolby A
value 01 Dolby SR
value 02 Academy
value 80 Nonsync at any position of the reel
value 81 Nonsync within the last minute of the reel, usually used for the last reel

@Gorges: Use a simple HEX Editor to edit.

OK Michael, thank you, I've managed to change the serial.
I have a question, if I change the serial number to 0, the audio can be played in test mode.
Is there a series that reproduces as a test synchronized with the film, whatever the series of the film?

If you change the serial on the files to zero the disc should play with any print ignoring the print's serial. Doesn't make any sense to me. What do you wanna do?

Note that all feature files on the disc MUST have the same serial, in your case all to zero except S/N 1045 for Reel14 and 1004 for Reel15.

If you want to make a disc to play without timecode (in case you don't have the print) just replace the first 6 letters of the header to "SETUP ". This creates a selfplay file.

Hello friends, here I have another problem, to see if anyone knows anything about this:
I bought a DTS XD10 processor and this contained about 20 dts copied to your hard drive, I can play them with the processor and the 35mm movie perfectly.
I extracted the hard drive and copied all the content so I could copy the .aud to other people, but when I try to play the .aud with foobar2000, at minute 2 "this starts a protection and sounds are heard.
Does anyone know how to remove that protection from these files?
Here I put a file of Harry Potter 5, reel 8, and also another file that bears the same name that is in another folder.

That's an AUE file even when the extension is AUD. Rename to .AUE and foobar plays fine.

Hey Michael,
That info for the DTS header is excellent. The AUE key looks like it is 01 at offset 92 and then a 16 bit number that is the key. Do you have any idea how the DTS timecode uses or reads that key?

I have access to a print that has a set of DTS AUE discs. I'm gonna check the head of a reel and see if I can spot any strange DTS blocks. If Greg is right that after a short time it does not get the correct info it drops then the info must be at the head of the reel somewhere.

Hey Markus,

Yes, 01 set at 92 indicates that the file is encrypted, 93-94 is the 16 bit key.

The key is stored in the print's timecode by re-appearing of the serial-block in a certain pattern to match the key stored in the AUE file. This prevented the audio to be pirated by just using a timecode generator connected to a DTS unit.

Hey Carsten,

As far as I know encrypted files run on 1.46 only since the TC sends a pattern to match the key. I would be surprised if the encryption process was implemented on previous versions already.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

I have tested my timecode generator on an AUE print and can confirm that the DTS6 and the XD10 both drop out after approximately 2 minutes if it does not receive the correct AUE key.

I have also inspected the 35mm print and its DTS timecode and discovered that the serial number blocks appears at very strange intervals. Normally the DTS timecode has a serial number block every 4,8,16 or 32 frames. Usually 4 at the head and tail of a reel and 32 in the middle. Below is the frequency that I discovered. Anyone notice a pattern?

4,16,8,8,16,12,4,16,4,12,12,4,4,12,8,4,4,16,12,4,4,12,4,8,4,4,8,4,8,4,4,4,4,8,8,8,12,4,4,12,8,8,8,4,4,12....

If somebody likes to figure it out, here is what I got so far.

Since foobar is capable of decrypting AUEs without the print's frequency of serial blocks the key stored in 93-94 must be all it needs to decrypt it.

AUE file compared to same decrypted file:
Key in Hex: 54/08
Key in Dec: 84/08

AUE/AUD Stream Comparison
(I included the image as a link because of it's vertical length)

That is a short piece of stream at position 30,072,332 (~2 minutes into the file) where the encryption starts.
From there every 320 bits a new cycle of encryption starts by encrypting the first 80 bits only (for each channel) and just 8 bit of the 16 bit stream (red markings in the picture).

In this case the difference between encrypted bits and decrypted bits in the first pattern is: 33/-233 and for the following: 36/-220. Then it repeats as you can see in the image.

Anyone noticed the spread is always 256? Interesting number.

33/-233 and 36/-220 is defined by the AUE's key. Initially when encrypting: To increase or decrease the 8 bits depends if the original uncrypted 8 bits + 33 still fits within 8 bits, otherwise -220 (or vice versa in case the number of in- or decrease is exactly the bit's value).

The question is: How is 33/-233 and 36/-220 related to 54 08.

If someone wants to know the print's serial block frequency or needs the files just let me know.

Hey Michael,
I think you are on to something. How did you get the correct values (33 and 36) to insert to make the file work properly? Maybe the AUE key works with the serial number to create the decrypt values. What was the serial number on the file.
If we tried a bunch of AUE discs with known solutions we would eventually see a pattern. I'm really curious how you found the correct decrypt bits.
