Well, it WAS true back in 2003 when I first wrote it. My how things change. After the studio did some marketing research, they discovered it would cost... MONEY, and a lot of it, to make an animated theatrical feature. Compared to the minimal cost of a straight to DVD feature, and with the fan base already instilled to buy it, it was a no brainer.
With the failure of South Park and Beavis and Butthead at the box office, studios may get excited about theatrical versions of popular cartoons, that is until the balance sheet comes forth and shows them it's a sure fire loser if they do.
Cartoons are only profitable if they are from Pixar, or if they use cheaper animation standards.
