The only thing funky about this system is the BIG speaker boxes installed in each door, and the 2 installed behind the back seat. Each has its own 25 watt amplifier. I cant easily describe 'em, but it looks klunky. The biggest problem I've had time and time again with this system is the Blaupunkt cassette transport. I have gone through 5 rebuilds over the years, and finally, after I had enough torture, I bought a NOS deck from GM. They were sooo proud of this unit! After 7 years, now I need to repair the cassette EQ switch. I can touch it, and hear the change in the high-end. Why not replace the system? Why not replace the car? Simple: I like things that are paid for. If this car used a tuned exhaust pipe, it's long-gone. I have some elderly in-laws and trying to find a CD-Radio that they could use was very very difficult. They don't understand knobs and switches and flashing lights...they understand putting in a CD like they used to put on an LP, pressing one button and hearing music. One volume control and one tone control. Anything more would be FAR more than they could handle. (I finally found a simple CD-Radio that did the job for them for about $99.) Bose products are for the people that don't want to mess. Turn it on and leave it. A good friend of mine bought a 1-2-3 system, with 3 speakers, a bass unit(I can't bring myself to call it a sub) and that's it. Minimal wires, minimal fuss. That is all she wanted, and it works well for her. I'm sure that's why Bose advertises on Paul Harvey...his listening audience tilts toward the more "mature" and they want things simple and compact. I wish more companies would produce simple items like this. I tried to find a simple remote that would work one device, and I just couldn't find one out there. The minimum is 3, and that is just too many for elderly with degenerative illnesses. Oh, one more thing about Bose...I love the way Paul Harvey Jr. punches the word BOSE when he introduces his father..."Brought to you by the B-O-S-E Corporation!!!" As for me, I like my JBL and Polk speakers, and no Bose will ever darken my family room. These people generally need hearing assistant devices and can barely hear. So the " quality " sound of Bose products doesn't seem to matter over the ease of use. That being said, why not go get a Radio Shack cheapie radio for 1/4 the cost? As for their " subs "? I wouldn't call them subwoofers either, because they aren't. The Cinema version was much longer and went down to the 25 to 30hz region easily. I believe it was a half wavelength pipe.
