Just watched Jay Leno for the first time in HD. While it looks better than SD, it really looks rather poor for high definition. I think maybe NBC loves compression. Edges were chalky and there wasn't a lot of detail. They really need to increase the broadcast bandwidth to at least 50mbps. Even SD NTSC DV (the digital video format used in $200 camcorders) is at 25mbps and people even bitch about it's 5:1 compression. I've also noticed that whenever there are flashing lights on an HD broadcast or scrolling (like a view of the ground from a quick plane), the entire screen turns into blocks with a definite sub-SD resolution simply due to the incompetant compression. How does the FCC let them get away with this? I guess soon consumer cameras will be way above "broadcast quality" since what I am seeing now is actually considered passable.
