On the topic of antiquated TV equipment: I've been playing with an Ikegami HL-79E tube camera lately. Yes, I am a masochist. Anyway, does anyone have any tips for aligning the tubes? This is causing much frustration, as I can never seem to get the geometry correct for all three tubes.

Do I really need a "proper" registration chart? I've been using a grid chart, but not one of the fancy $100ish charts. Are the expensive charts really that much better.

Also, what kind of cable do I need to connect this to the 14-pin input on a Sony 3/4" VTR (mine is a VO-8800, if that makes a difference)? I've been using the generic composite video BNC output, but that doesn't allow for remote start/stop of the recorder.

(No need to tell me that I am crazy to even touch this stuff in an age of cheap handycams that are better than this thing ever was. I know that already. I like doing things the hard (and heavy) way. At least this has a real lens.)

You could probably get a fairly good coarse alignment with a grid chart, but yeah, you really should use an EIA registration chart to get better results. You’ll notice that the lines are more condensed in the sides and corners, out where the scanning gets more critical; you’ll be able to finesse the finer pin/trap type adjustments if you use one. Also, better registration equals better electrical focus and resolution (which as I recall, if everything was dead-nuts on, maxed out at a whopping 650 TVL.)

The rule was always to start at the centers and move out. That is, get your R/B centering, rotation and skew dead on, and then deal with H & V sizes and linearity after. As I mentioned above, the corners and sides are the hardest part, and you will notice the pin-cushioning adjustments and trap really come into play here, so note where they are.

As far as the cable goes, this camera was introduced after the U-Matic era and if my dubious memory serves you actually cannot control a VTR from this camera. The side buttons on the lens, where the traditional REC buttons were, were actually for view finder return selection. That multi-pin connector on the back was for interface with the CCU unit, or with the optional triax adaptor if you were going that way. I spent years with these cameras, and I can safely say that I never saw anyone roll a tape from it (but that’s not to say that is not possible, and I could be happily corrected on this point).

Thanks. I will get a registration chart and try again.

One other issue that I'm having is that the infinity stop on the lens (a Fujinon something-or-other) isn't quite at infinity and the picture can't quite be focused at the extreme telephoto setting. I know about the backfocus adjustment, but that only seems to correct the wide end of the range (which was fine to begin with). This might be a lens issue, rather than a camera issue. Any ideas?

Well, the question is can you achieve sharp focus at any focal length? Bearing in mind what we said above, if the tube alignment is significantly out you will not get a truly sharp image anywhere, and the softness will be exaggerated at telephoto range. The way to eliminate the camera from the equation is to monitor the G channel only on either a B/W monitor (preferred) or thru the viewfinder, and see if a sharp image can be obtained. If you can get a good image that way, then the camera is at least OK (and be sure, BTW, that the 2x lens extender is up and out before doing any of this).

If you turned the back-focus flange, then before you make any kind of evaluation you need to reset that, as front and back focus play off each other. The procedure is:

1. Open the iris as far as possible, dial in an ND on the filter wheel if you need to.
2. Look at the Green channel only, as above.
3. Zoom into a sharply defined object at least 30 ft. away, and set front focus on the lens ring as best as possible. Having the viewfinder peaking cranked up will help.
4. Zoom all the way out, and rotate the back focus flange till the same image is as sharp as possible.
5. Recheck things a few times before locking the flange down.

If none of that helps, the lens probably needs to be collimated.

The HL-79 is still a viable performer and a great camera. You will need a grid(registration chart) AND a resolution chart to properly align it and a really good hi-rez monitor... B&W is preferable for camera alignment, a waveform monitor and vectorscope. A multiburst chart would also help to check channel bandwidth and condition of the Stats... All pickup toobs have a tendency to go soft as they age because of the cathode aging in the electron gun.

First looking only at the green channel zoom the camera lens in all the way on some well defined object... doesn't have to be a chart... set back focus so image is as sharp as you can get it and then zoom back. Image should stay just as sharp. If not lens needs servicing or back focus of toob is slightly off. Go back and forth adjusting back focus and till the back focus and lens zoom . Once its in correct alignment and you have proper video bandwidth then align the red channel and then register it to the green channel. Blue is last and least important since it only accounts for about 12% of the NTSC spectrum. Registration still has to be on for the blue channel too or it will be painfully obvious but frequency response is not as critical and getting a perfect focus on the blue channel might not be quite as easy or possible.

You will have to go back and forth over many of the adjustments to get em perfect! Just remember the green channel is the refrence channel so once its set don't touch any of those adjustments.

Wow...thanks to both Marks for all the tips. Please keep them coming, along with any other comments from anyone who has worked on these beasts.

So, each tube has three adjustments: focus, beam, and "cal." I assume that focus does the obvious, but haven't messed with that one. Beam seems to have something to do with comet-tail reduction (or increase). What is "cal" and what is the proper setting for "beam"? I have a small manual for this camera, but it's badly translated from Japanese and seems to be written for people who already understand camera alignment.

I don't have a separate waveform monitor and vectorscope, but I do have an SGI workstation that can run "videoscope" (software implementations of both). Not sure how accurate this is, but it is probably better than nothing. I have a pretty good color monitor (Sony PVM-8045Q), but no B&W monitor. Would a B&W security-camera monitor work, or do I need a studio model?

On my camera, the blue tube seems to be pretty noisy until it warms up (takes about 30-45 minutes), then it works fine. Not sure if this is normal or not. The hour meter is about halfway to 5000 (is this the recommended tube replacement interval?).

FWIW there's a service manual for that camera being offered for bid on one of the "foreign" ebay sites, starts at $15 (US) shipped. Google on "ikegami hl-79e service manual" and it's currently the first hit.

The adjustments are this: FOCUS is the tube electrical focus, as opposed to optical focus. This is another reason why it’s a good idea to use an EIA registration chart; there are vertical wedges that will allow you to set this up by looking at them on a waveform monitor and then peaking the adjustment. BEAM is an anti-comet-tail adjustment; you want to set it to cancel any color lag. There is an automatic beam optimization (ABO) circuit on the camera, but it never worked very well and is best left off. The best way to set this manually is by very brightly illuminating a white object, and with the iris quite far open pan the camera very quickly left to right and see how much trailing flare you get. You can then tweak it out with this adjustment. Be warned: BEAM and FOCUS play off each other, so when changing one you will have to double check the other. CAL is the overall output level of the individual channel. If you hunt around on the camera, somewhere you will find a switch that applies a sawtooth voltage across the tube’s pre-amp. Looking at a waveform monitor, set the RGB CAL levels to 1V for each of the RGB channels.

Strictly speaking, you don’t need a B/W monitor to do this stuff, but you will get better and less frustrating results if you have one, it’s easier to look at R/B/-G with a monochrome set. If you can hunt one up that underscans, then mo' better. Any monitor that you can feed an image to via an RGB or other connector will do.

The B channel noise is not normal at all, but I’d be surprised if it’s the tube and not the pre-amp itself, very likely a transistor somewhere that is having a thermal issue.

Yeah, Ikegami was pretty well known for it's poor and sometimes unintentionally hilarious manual traslations. The worst, though, was the Thompson TV1515, the first triax-able camera. Everything inside was in French. Sacrebleu, what a pain.

The B&W Security monitor would be better for regestration than the color one. Any slight mis-adjustment in the color monitor's convergence would just make camera regestration all the more difficult to see. Also typically B&W monitors overall geometry can also be made better than a color CRT set is capable of. The geometry of the B&W monitor can esaily be confirmed by looking at the composite output of a Tektronix pattern/sync generator and adjusted to be good. I'm not familiar with your WFM/Vectorscope program but I too agree that its better than nothing. I would reccomend you get that manual!

Different techs set the beam in different ways but following the camera manual for now would be best till you master it. Too much beam current can ruin the toobs and cause target burn.... to little and you get lots of comet trail. Focus is just what it says but I don't remember having to touch the Calibrate adjustments ever.... The channels noise levels are from worst to best... Blue, Red, Green, This is due to the amount of gain used in each toob's preamp and directly relates to the amount of light hitting each toob's target after it is filtered in the prism assy... I believe the light level percentages are as follows.... Blue 12% Red 26% Green 62%... these may not be completely accurate but are close. Also, don't mess with any other adjustments in the camera at all... you have to assume they are correct untill otherwise prooven that they are off. Some of them can be a real pain to set up and very time consumming.

Camera toob life span is more a factor of sticking highlights, ultimate resolution, and noise level than other factors although target blemishes would not be far behind. If you can't get rid of comet trailing without excessive beam current then its time for new toobs..... VERY EXPENSIVE BTW! Last time I re-toob'd an RCA TK-76 (around 1979) the toobs were in the 12K price range... Larger toobes like the 1" studio camera Plumbicons were that much apiece! There are probably good used toobs out there for a song and a dance.

Thanks, again. I think that I will try to rent a proper waveform/vectorscope when I get a registration chart and go through the setup procedure described in the operator's manual. I'll probably have more questions then.

For those who care, I've uploaded to Youtube an example of the noise that I am getting in the blue channel before the camera warms up. The color bars are fine at powerup, so the issue is definitely in the camera end of things. It looks somewhat worse on a monitor than it does here (the Youtube compression seems to reduce the problem slightly).
