My problem with Canon's "prosumer" cameras are the lenses. They kind of suck. Everything is controlled by little motors denying you true manual control, and because of this they also have quite a bit of lag to start and stop if you use the zoom ring on the lens, and good luck getting it to go at a stable variable speed.  |  IP: Logged Ron Lacheur Jedi Master Film Handler Posts: 650 From: British Columbia, Canada Registered: Feb 2002 posted 05-02-2006 12:21 AM                     Well I wasn't operating, I was the sound mixer on that shoot. From an audio side of things, the gain controls are a pain in the ass to adjust. They are very finicky as well. A tap next to one of the gain knob can up or down your level by 2db ( according to the meter ). They have included an reference for -20 now as well as the dvx100 standard -12 which makes it easier to calibrate to your mixer output.  |  IP: Logged Joe Redifer You need a beating today Posts: 12859 From: Denver, Colorado Registered: May 99 posted 09-14-2006 09:05 PM                        Tomorrow I am shooting a national commercial in HDTV for Albertson's. We are using two cameras. One of them is a Sony which I have not yet seen, the other is the aforementioned Canon XLH1 which I have here with me right now (I return it on Saturday). We want to try this camera out to see how we like it. The camera itself is pretty good, but it doesn't seem to be as good as the Canon XL2 SD camera. It bitches when I install my 3x wide angle lens on it, saying that it is an "HD Incompatible Lens", but proceeds to shoot in HD anyway. The camera is very heavy for no good reason. It shoots on pathetic HDV tapes. The HDV format sucks ass. I hate it. Unacceptable. 1080i ONLY! What's up with that? Super retarded. I would like an option for 720p. You can't search or step through the footage you've recorded because it uses MPEG and MPEG sucks ass which is why everyone except stupid people hate it. I want to shoot in 720p because that is much easier to upscale to 1080i than 1080i is to downscale to 720p. The image quality is very soft compared to real HD (which I don't think HDV is). It is definitely much better than SD, but it won't blow anyone away who happen to have my awesome standards. This goes for all framerates (60i, 30"p" and 24"p") and every lens I have tried on it. Nice but not great. Of course the video will be destroyed when broadcast over the air with a whole bunch o' digital artifacts, so I shouldn't worry about that. HDV pretends to be HD.
