Author Topic: Gone With The Wind/Wizard of OZ on Blu-ray Frank Angel Film God Posts: 5305 From: Brooklyn NY USA Registered: Dec 1999 posted 04-17-2009 09:46 AM                        Where are you guys purchasing your BluRays? Are retailers all pretty much selling them at "suggested retail" or are some vendors giving better prices than others? Also, how is Fox doing with their library in terms of releasing on BluRay? There are a few of my favorite titles that I would really like HD versions -- THE KING AND I, CAROUSEL, OKLAHOMA! SOUND OF MUSIC, SOUTH PACIFIC....hmmmm, I guess I AM a R&H fan. I know about THE ROBE which will be nice to have even though personally I am not a fan other than for its historical significance and the Alfred Newman score (mostly stolen note for note from his earlier score for HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME). Hardly anyone is selling the discs at suggested retail. And they have a pre-order price guarantee so if you have it on order and they lower the price any time before the release - including only temporarily - you will get the lowest price. Out of "brick and mortar" retailers, Wal-Mart and Sam's Club occasionally have good deals on Blu-ray movies if you can stand the limited selection of titles. Best Buy and Target have larger selections of movies on Blu-ray, but sometimes the prices are higher too. Shopping mall oriented stores, such as Sam Goody, fye, etc., are among the worst in Blu-ray movie pricing. They often charge full MSRP or perhaps a buck or two under. I just laugh. I'll get a bigger laugh out of their used Blu-ray movie prices, which sometimes weigh in higher than what Wal-Mart is charging for a new copy of the same Blu-ray movie. Their music prices are ridiculous too (most CDs in fye are priced at $19.99). Overall, you need to shop around if you're going to buy a movie on Blu-ray from a traditional retail store. If you don't want to bother with that and can stand waiting a few days for the movie to arrive in the movie, online shopping is tough to beat.  |  IP: Logged Claude S. I only had time to watch the first thirty minutes and was very impressed with the restoration work WB did with the original 8 per VistaVision negative. The only thing missing was the original vibrant color because the image had a rather faded look that shifted more to the red especially the indoor scenes. The outdoor footage looked much better. Having recently printed faded medium format professional Ectacolor still negatives I had shot over twenty years and made the best effort restoring the image with Photoshop and other software, I thought the restorers did a fantastic job with the film. I was also very happy Warner Brothers Home Video did not do anything with the original monaural sound. I was puzzled why the studio decided to use clips from the movie in all the special features about the making of the film that had gorgeous color. I am sure these were from regular 35mm separation elements. It would have been wonderful especially with the storage capabilities of Blue Ray to feature the movie with the gorgeous color from the separation elements as well as from the restored original VistaVision source. Fox did this with the two disc edition of THE SAND PEBBLES on DVD.
