Well, having seen the JVC 4K "consumer" projector at Cedia a few months ago, I have to say that the smaller pixel size definitely helps to improve the image when using larger screens and viewing at closer distances.

As far as the lack of 4K sources, the projector will upscale HD and 2K sources to 4K, and many of the demo clips that were used at Cedia started off as 2K originals and were upscaled by the projector system. For the previous years Cedia at Denver, JVC actually demoed a short film shot at 4K with the Red camera system. They also showed some aircraft simulator footage that was rendered at 4K. Both of those were spectacular on a 20' wide screen.

The cost, of the JVC 4K projector, however clearly places outside of my definition of the "consumer" marketplace.
