quote: Hillary Charles Yes, I have to admit, as much as prefer the historical accuracy of A Night To Remember, the Cameron movie really sucked me in.
If you want a giggle, the Nazis made a propaganda spectacle, also called Titanic, some of the process shots from which were reused in ANTR. Subtle it ain't. The Jewish ethnicity of the Astors and the Ismays is emphasised in virtually every scene, and Lightoller's character is replaced by a very serious and deadpan German who tries valiantly to dissuade the rolling-around-drunk Captain Smith from going full steam ahead into the iceberg. And just in case you snoozed through the whole pic and only woke up for the final scene, an intertitle right at the end reminds the viewer that 'The fiendish British-Jewish conspiracy sent hundreds of innocent people to their watery graves ... a testament to avarice and greed!'
Ironically, Goebbels was forced to ban the film and write it off after test screenings in the autumn of 1943 revealed that audiences were reading the Titanic going down as a metaphor for the way Germany was going in the war. It's now available on DVD from Kino.
